Keep an eye out in the Texas forum I just did a photo shoot in the Tyler Rose Garden on Wednesday. The roses were out in full bloom & all 14 acres (largest in the nation) looked absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

I agree. Georgia's coastline often gets the short shrift but it's 100 miles long and quite spectacular.

Too bad it's a four hour drive from Atlanta. C'mon, high speed rail!

One thing I do find similar about Atlanta and LA is the way pockets of activity are sort of tucked away and often have to be discovered (or pointed out by locals). In New York, you can go to different sections of the city and fairly reaidly get at least some feel for the character of the area. In decentralized cities the most desirable neighborhoods and entertainment areas are spread out all over the place and you can easily waste a lot of time driving around unless you have some "inside" information. That's especially the case with Atlanta's crazy hodgepodge of non-gridded streets.

Phoenix, and Las Vegas have much more in common to LA than Atlanta..Most East Coast/West Coast cities are polar opposites. FYI I have lived in both the Atlanta area and Los Angeles..they feel and look nothing alike IMO..not even a little bit. Miami is by far LA's closest cousin in the East.

As far as the US Rose Capital goes; I have always heard that it was Portland.

They do indeed share some similarities, but I wouldn't pair the two together. The abundance of Craftsman/Four Square houses, secondary business centers (Buckhead, Perimeter, Midtown, et al) and auto-centric nature of Atlanta very much reminded me of LA. That and the fact that many Californians call Atlanta home.

In fact, I - an Angeleno - recently visited Atlanta and wrote about my impressions there, including some of the aforementioned similarities to LA (and photos!):

prettyugly.: Atlanta: grit and grits

"Big Butts and Big McMansions".LOL So true!Good piece.I especially like the observation you made in noting the vast diversity within the African American community here.

I LOVE that picture of the "soul sista" with her arms crossed looking with so much confidence.Maybe put it in black and white and sell that pic!
