I'll have to pick Los Angeles because it's not really a family-friendly city.

If, I really had to live there...

San Diego
Fresno
Maybe Bakersfield and Los Angeles.

But, I prefer not to even think about living in California

Mine would be a tossup between:
- San Francisco
- Any of the LA Beachtowns but not LA Proper.
- San Diego

Definately San Francisco. Compact, dense, great public transportation, great cultural amenities, fantastic dining and shopping, easy to get around and NO CAR NEEDED. It's charming with beautiful architecture and I love the fact that its not too hot and not too cold.
