Minnesota vs. Nevada
These are states that have some striking and surprising similarities. They both have one major metro (MSP / Las Vegas), one auxiliary city (Duluth / Reno), and a bunch of empty space. They also have a wide variety of climates: Minnesota varying from Great Plains prairie to boreal forest, and Nevada varying from desert to forested mountains. Which state do you prefer? Choose based on:
Culture
Affordability
Diversity
Progressiveness
Weather
Variety
Lifestyle
Cities
Small towns
Outdoors
Natural resources
Colleges / universities

What an odd couple of states to try to compare... What are you hoping to gain from this discussion?
For the record, for somebody that's from Mankato, you should know that there's a lot more to MN than "empty space." You should also know that Rochester is probably much more the auxiliary city in MN than Duluth anymore, since you live....what? all of an hour from there?

Culture: Cosmopolitan, I don't do "culture" for regionality. The more International a city becomes and the more it embraces Globalization, they more I like them. Minneapolis & Las Vegas can lay claim to that cosmopolitan feature.
Affordability: Both are
Diversity: Minneapolis, I give it to Minneapolis to lead the way in Ethnic Diversity
Progressiveness: Why the hell is this always a criteria? When will people freakin understand that there are many that are happy where they live regardless of political setting. If the place is growing, embracing a larger economy, and a appreciation in income, and people of all types can live happily together then it is progressive (in my opinion)
Weather: Don't care, its never stopped me before.
Variety: Tied, both are so large and scenic in different ways.
Lifestyle: I can do Twin Cities, Las Vegas, & Reno any day easily.
Cities Las Vegas = Minneapolis, Reno = Saint Paul (in my opinion) Toss up.
Small towns: Nevada, the Old West style towns have to be some thrilling places to see
Outdoors: Either
Natural resources: Minnesota, water is the most precious natural resource in the world
Colleges / universities: Minnesota
For me: I can do either, but if I had to pick then Minneapolis for Minnesota & Las Vegas for Nevada. I give it a tie.

I think it's pretty tough to compare two enormous (land area) states like this. I think the better comparison would be Las Vegas v. Minneapolis. Both are very nice cities and very nice metro areas. In the short term, the MSP economy is doing better. Overall, I think economically LV has the edge due to the weather.
I prefer desert to snow despite Chicago.

I pick Nevada because the Reno-Lake Tahoe Area is one of my favorite places. Wouldnt mind living there in fact.

I think Minnesota and Nevada have very little in common.
As far as "empty space," I don't think Minnesota has a lot of that; more than some states, of course, but it's nothing -- NOTHING -- like what you find in Nevada. After a cross-country drive this summer the fields of southern Minnesota felt positively cramped after driving across I-80 in Nevada; one of these years we'll have to go back and do Highway 50!
I prefer Minnesota to live, but Nevada is a fun place to visit. It also feels absolutely foreign to me, a native Minnesotan. I think that's part of the reason I find it fascinating.
