what about boston pops on the esplinade or harborfest/chowderfest, the octoberfests for harpoon and sam adams or even opening day at fenway.
every city will have tons of annual events, obviously.
Chicago= Taste of Chicago, Lollapalooza, Bud Billiken Day Parade, Puerto Rican Day Parade, etc. etc.
known by locals as the waste of chicago. The other "tastes of _insert neighborhood_ are good though" Forgetting St. Patricks Day southside parade...now that is fun. and the one over in west loop where they shut the streets down...
PR day also is a bit crazy
Looptopia was fun (for a city run event)
So is the night bike ride when they shut down the city.
this weekend is jazz fest, next is celtic fest.
Well off the top of my head some of the big events SF has every year are
-Bay To Breakers...an excuse for people to dress up in Halloween outfits in May. It's "suppose" to be a race that is 7 miles long...however more people dress up and drink than actually "run" the race. In past years alcohol was allowed so things would get pretty crazy. However this year they banned alcohol and nudity (this is SF were talking about!). Along the route many people open their houses and hosts little parties along the route.
Halloween in the Castro- Sadly they shut this event down a couple years back due to the vast amount of people who would show up. Too much for the SF police to handle. It was the "it" place to be for Halloween in the Bay Area. The small street would be filled with thousands and thousands of people.
Chinese New Years Parade- SF has one the largest Chinatowns in the US so this is a pretty big event.
Gay Pride Parade- Enough said lol
Love Parade- Gay Pride Parade part two ( I literally saw a naked man in the middle of the sidewalk stroking himself!)
Aloha Festival- A lot of Hawaiian venders and performances put on by local performers.
There is a lot more but these on the ones I can think of off the top of my head
