It's been said that the Mafia is no longer operating in New Orleans but nobody actually knows if it's true or not. According to outsiders, Carlos Marcello was thee the Mafia boss of New Orleans from 1947 until his death in 1993, but according to insiders, Leoluca Trombatore was the real power behind the scenes up until his death in 1964. Go figure.

Yes, the Mile High City had a somewhat large crime organization back in the day. The Smaldone's headed Denver's main crime syndicate from the 1920's through the 1980's. They also ran a protection racket in Pueblo, which at one time had a substantial Italian population. They owned Gaetano's Italian Restaurant off of 32nd Ave, where many police officers frequently lunched. Gaetano's is still there and has great food!

The "Family" was still ordering "hits" on their adversaries as late as the '70s. I remember bombings and drive-by assassinations making news when I was in high school.

After many of the soldiers and capos were either killed off or died in prison, like most of the country's "Mafioso", they seemed to just fade away.

I say don't be fooled the Italian mafia is alive and well in most large cities and many smaller ones. They maintain a cloak of legitimacy.

I wouldn't be surprised if Asian, Latin American and Eastern European crime syndicates are shaking down and bullying what's left of a relatively weak Italian mafia.

From the FBI's website.

Quote:
Since their appearance in the 1800s, the Italian criminal societies known as the Mafia have infiltrated the social and economic fabric of Italy and now impact the world. They are some of the most notorious and widespread of all criminal societies.

There are several groups currently active in the U.S.: the Sicilian Mafia; the Camorra or Neapolitan Mafia; the ’Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia; and the Sacra Corona Unita or United Sacred Crown.

We estimate the four groups have approximately 25,000 members total, with 250,000 affiliates worldwide. There are more than 3,000 members and affiliates in the U.S., scattered mostly throughout the major cities in the Northeast, the Midwest, California, and the South. Their largest presence centers around New York, southern New Jersey, and Philadelphia.

I am from the heart of Little Italy in Omaha. Omaha has one of the most lucrative mafia bases in the USA. It is secret, and hidden. Omaha, Nebraska is one of the wealthiest cities next to Beverly Hills, CA. Nebraska stays low profile, because we don't want any "outsiders" moving here or looking our way. As long as we seem benign to the rest of the nation you will think that we are just corn husking bumpkins. We portray that purposely, because we are rich. Very rich. A huge amount of money, stocks, insurance companies, etc goes through Omaha. Oh yes, "there be mafia in Omaha" and I can see into their kitchen windows from mine. lol Wow that you all believe they don't exist.
