From some of the posts on this thread, I'd think different.

LA is #2 and has been for 3-4 decades. Chicago is arguably not even the #3 anymore, personally I would give that to Washington DC. Only a Chicagoan or Midwesterner would think Chicago is #2 behind NYC. I am seriously LOLOLOLing right now. You guys keep living in your delusional world though. I'll live in this thing called reality.

Most Skyscrapers | Statistics | EMPORIS
Hong Kong - 1,223
NYC - 563
Tokyo - 344
Chicago - 282
Hong Kong has twice as many skyscrapers as NYC. NYC has twice as many as Chicago.
You need to know what the actual definition of a highrise is, and no, its not as vague a term as you think.

I thought we were having a pretty decent debate actually.
Film/tv production/theater ... i.e. having actors and industry is HIGHLY beneficial to the culture experience and general creativeness of a city. That is why cities like New Orleans and Atlanta are pushing so hard right now to get more and keep them there.
I can't say the same for urbanologists sarcastic remarks.

We were. it wasn't so much you, it was other people. I also need to stop visitng City vs. City because it will try your patience. That's really what I meant.

The only thing why people think Chicago is like NYC is b/c of the skyline, but NYC has something like 5000 more highrises than Chicago. It's truly a ridiculous comparison. These are FACTS.
None of these are slights on Chicago. Chicago is an amazing city, it's just not in the same dimension as NYC.

Only Manhattan and Brooklyn. Youre nitpicking. Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island do not have "more going on."
Thats a more practical comparison anyway, not splitting the city up into thirds.

Dude, thats why I barely come on here. They even attacked another NYer in here because he complimented Chicago. Its ridiculous.
The polls sure dont reflect their "not even close" mindset.

Honestly, IMO, NYC is the superior city, but that doesnt necessarily mean better. Chicago presents a better quality of life. Some of you people make Chicago out to be a third world city.
NYers live to work. Chicago works to live. I know its the City That Works, but it seems they enjoy themselves a hell of a lot more than NYers do. Maybe its the East Coast stigma of status, maybe it isnt. Who knows, but not everyones idea of a "city" is NYC. Chicago doesnt seem nearly as serious about its worklife than NYC. Tristann talks about 24 hour delis and being out til 4am. Please, how many times have I been out in the city around 3 or 4 or even 5. Its pretty dead at those hours for the most part. Its not this 24 hour party as some make it out to be. After about 3am most of the city nightlife consists of drunks making the trek home, either alone or with a group and garbage men. If you deny this, then I question that you even live in NY. The vibe dies down pretty quickly after 3.
We're all human beings, I think we can form our own opinions, without being told what the better city is, no?
For the record, I live in Central Jersey, am from Queens, and spent a decent amount of time in Chicago.

Emporis defines a Skyscraper as 100 meters (~308 ft), that is not the same definition as a highrise.

Yes, and thats what matters. Saying NYC has 5,000 more highrises (which is wrong) than Chicago and using that as a benchmark for superiority is laughable.
Skyscrapers matter, not highrises.
Sao Paolo, Shanghai and Tokyo probably have more highrises than NYC and Chicago combined.
We wouldnt necessarily say their highrise count makes them better, would we?
