I am interested in a neighborhood in Chicago that is comparable with the Highlands neighborhood in Louisville. The Highlands is an eclectic, funky, hipster neighborhood on the near east side of Louisville; it has many locally owned restaurants, music stores, bars, etc., and has a lot of character to it.
I've heard that Lincoln Park and some other neighborhoods in Chicago are filled with such places. How about Rogers Park? Anyone who is familiar with both cities is encouraged to compare any neighborhood(s) in Chicago which they think would be comparable with the Highlands.
Lincoln Park was hip in the 80s. Now it's played out. A nice neighborhood, but way past its "hipster" phase.
Rogers Park would actually be a good choice. It's eclectic but it's not self-consciously "hipster" and it still has a fair deal of its "edge" that has been mostly chased out of the erstwhile hipster neighborhoods of Bucktown and Wicker Park. Bucktown/Wicker Park (where the bulk of High Fidelity was set and filmed) still serves as a hipster gathering place because of certain venues, but as a place for hipsters to actually call home it is on the downward slope as the area completes its gentrification cycle. Ukranian Village just to the south of Wicker Park is still riding the crest. Some say Bridgeport on the south side is in the early phases of hipsterization. If it is, then it's in the very early stage. Pilsen is also cited as an up-and-coming artist neighborhood, but the east side of Pilsen is solidly gentrified while the west side of Pilsen is still gang territory, with not a lot of "hipster" in between if you ask me.
Thanks for the information. A job-related move is a possibility in the not-too-distant future, so I am considering the possibilities.
