Nashville has country and rock, but not much else.
NY has hip-hop, but not really much else.
I guess Atlanta has made some significant contributions to hip-hop...
And Miami's not up there but it should be considered. Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, KC and the Sunshine Band, etc.

Nashville is certainly dominated by country, especially in promotion, but the music scene and recording industry actually attracts quite a diverse range. Nashville as a music city is much more than is seen on tv.

Interesting question. I'd say:

1. New York based on sheer volume/variety/amount of music that was/is created here
2. LA: for the recording/production side of things, rock and roll in the 60's and west coast hip-hop
3. Nashville: don't underestimate country which is a huge segment and has been for decades
4. Detroit: Was king during the Motown era and has been fairly big recently with the garage revival, but doesn't have the consistency of the other places, IMO.

After that lots of cities have very rich music culture. In no particular order New Orleans Jazz, San Fran's rock, Seattle's grunge, Atlanta's Hip-hop, Chicago and Memphis blues, Austin's live music scene, etc.
