I was thinking New York also, but decided to throw in Los Angeles & Chicago too.
The title of the thread is, "the music capital" and to be honest I have my expectations set pretty high on this. I don't want to be in a thread where people are promoting life failure rappers for any form of music, I like rap too but its one genre.
A city to be "the music capital" it has to blend each and every genre and it has to export more of its music to the country then importing from others.
Which is why I firmly believe this is a New York, Chicago, & Los Angeles finish. No competition otherwise. Miami is also in consideration and so are Philadelphia & San Francisco.
Austin isn't the music capital, it is the "live" music capital, because of the number of live music acts playing in town, not the amount of national/worldwide music talent coming out of there like other cities in this list.
