Yep, both cities are important--that's why I don't really think they can be compared. NYC's place in the global economy can't be denied, but nor can the impact of the decisions made--or not made--in Washington.

Fair enough.

Nowhere on planet earth comes close to touching the BosWash corridor in terms of power, influence and wealth.

DC politicians have all been bought and paid for by NYC, both Republicans and Democrats, so as far as who is calling the shots its a moot point really.

As far as global politics goes, don't forget that things like the United Nations are located in NY.

Anyone who thinks DC is more powerful than new york is delusional. New york is on a London,Tokyo,Paris type level without even being a capitol. The govt serves the country not the other way around. If nyc says jump, DC says how high?

This is the Global city POWER index. Where is DC? Its not even on the list. But look who's number one

Simple question what would hurt the U.S. more if there was a major terrorist attack on DC or NYC? The obvious answer is NYC because unless the attack took out the whole federal govt. the country could and would keep running even if it meant that the President would go in to hiding or leaving the city and setting up an alternative command some where else. This country runs on money and almost all the money that is made in this country goes through NYC one way or the other. So to say that DC is more powerful is nonsense, the feds are powerful not the city itself and that's where these DC posters get it wrong, like I said before the govt. has many alternatives for a command post in case of a catastrophic event but there is no alternative to NYC.

Most of you sound like idiots. Stop trying to separate DC (city) from the feds. Your global power index is a sham. Decisions made in DC determine if we live or die. If that's not power then tell me what is power. And to answer your dumb comment, it is easier for Wall Street to relocate than the entire Federal Government which consist of 1000 federal agencies such as CIA, FBI, Homeland Security, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Supreme Court, DOJ, NSA, DEA, DOT, DOE, EPA etc..... Money is printed in DC. DC (SEC) regulates Wall Street. Get real son.

As for the United Nations! They have no power at all. George Bush went to war with Iraq without their consent. The United States government has and will always do what it wants, whenever, wherever, with or without the UN. The US created the UN.

The scope of DC's power is huge. Someone in DC (SEC) regulates and monitors the actions of Wall Street in NYC. When DC wants to step in and pull the plug at any of the big firms, they do. Someone in DC (FCC), just sent a letter to CBS in NYC that they will be fined if they don't censor Howard Stern. Someone in DC (FDA) just informed a NYC pharmaceutical company that they can't market or sell their new drug that cures premature ejaculation. Someone in DC (FAA) just informed the makers of AirBus that there planes will be grounded because they are not safe.

Smh,

If there were to be some kind of a "Major Attack" on either NY or DC, then chances are the terrorist would be a lot more successful striking NY than they would DC, because DC is about 10 times more heavily guarded than NY, due to this being the home of the president and the United States Govt. I hate to bring this up, but remember on 9-11 when our enemies went after DC and NY???? their Mission was a Success in NY and even thought they Hit the Pentagon that still wasn't their initial Target. Their initial Target was the white house, but they couldn't get anywhere near it, so they had to settle for the Pentagon, which isn't even in DC its in Virginia. Like I said the other day, both Cities are indeed powerful, but its the kind of power they have that make them a bit different. NY is the Financial Capitol that also has the Power of influence. DC is the Nation's Capitol that has the power to control. Influence is like leading, except people get to choose whether or not to follow. The power of control is actually having the ability to make people do as you say, wheather they want to or not.

This whole thing with people that keep saying "DC doesnt really have power because the Govt. is for everyone" argument doesn't really make that much since when you actually sit down and think about it. When you look up Washington, DC in a Dictionary or even somewhere online the first thing that it states is that Its a City that was founded and Home to the UNITED STATES GOVT. So if thats the case then their really is no Separating the Govt. from its Chosen hometown, because thats how they planed it to be. Thats like trying to detach NY from its Financial Sector, which was designed to help all US Citizens and not just the ones in NY. Another thing to look at as far as Power goes and how its being used is we have to figure out who's telling who what to do? Who's taking orders? and which City between DC and NY does the most powerful people and Officials live and what do they have control over? Those are all things that you have to factor in when it comes to what City possesses the most Power. If this is what its come to, then I would like to see everyone make a list of the the top 5 or 10 most powerful people or organizations in NY and DC and whatever it is that they control, so we can actually see which City really has that Bull Dozing kind of Power.

Top 5 Most Powerful ppl and Organizations in DC/World

- President of the Untied States (The Lead head of the Federal Govt.)
- Vice President of the United States (Presiding Officer of the US Senate)
- Executive Banch (Has authority of state Bureaucracy)
- Legislative Branch (Has the power to pass, amend, and repeal Laws)
- Judiciary Branch (A systems of courts that interprets, and applies the Laws)

There is No other city in America with this Kind of Power in it and that includes NY. Majority of this countries power lies within our Govt and its located in one city, which is Washington. The Govt. is the most powerful Entity in the World and even though its for all of us it resides in Washington DC. You cant Mention Washington without mentioning the Govt and Vice Versa the same way our Financial Hub of this Country is in NY.

Politically its a clear win for D.C. culturally its any other major city, or any combination of them. New York City is very relevant in the grant scheme of things, however most people I know in semi-urban Illinois wouldn't give NYC another thought.

DC could shut down NYC today. D.C. could relocate everything out of NYC today. DC could literally finish NYC off right now. DC just has to say a word wall street moves out of NYC. DC can tax NYC residents at a higher rate than any US citizen by 500% today if it wants to. That in turn would cause a major exodus out of NYC. Are you guys serious? DC could quarantine NYC declare marshall law and close the island of Mahattan down today.
