Some seem to think Washington is more powerful than New York City due to it being the nation's capital.

Is it?

Ying & Yang.

It's hard to measure it, if you think about it, is finance head and shoulders above the government? Or is government head and shoulders above finance? Neither. Financial Services link the investments and banking systems around the world into one, and political systems do the negotiations and build relationships with foreign countries. This is simply a matter of: Global economy or global governmental balance. You cant replicate the two premier cities in America in any other country, and neither should be more important than the other in terms of those two things. Everything besides economy & government goes to New York, easily.

A city like London is both the financial capital and political capital of its country. Same with Tokyo, same with Paris, same with Singapore, same with Sydney, same with Rome, same with Mexico City, and so on and so forth.

In terms of importance, one can most certainly make the argument that it is tied as being the # 1 most important city in America along with New York, but in terms of everything else, its New York ahead of the curb.

If you're talking about political power, then definitely yes. Otherwise, overall no.

There is no most powerful city in the United States. Thats the entire purpose for our entire political system so that everyone is represented fairly. Neither New York or Washington is any more powerful than any other city.

Definitely DC! If you step outside the box and see that some government agency in DC touches and regulates every aspect of your life in some shape or form.

The reality is that, if Washington were to disappear, the government would continue to exist - simply in another city. Congress would meet in a different place, the president would live in a different building. Most of the agencies would relocate as well.

If New York were to be lost, it would likely be a fatal hemorrhage of financial blood. Our economy would crash and it would be terribly difficult for the country to rebound.

Washington is a hugely overrated city in the United States.

I would say that New York is more powerful.

I understand where you are coming from but this statement is totally false. Every state is entitled to representation in a fair manner but some cities clearly have more clout than others. I mean, just think of how much more influential NYC is than San Jose.

On Wall Street - they actually have a secondary facility, maybe more where they can run the market remotely

either place being impacted would be huge, to me the differance is that the Gov't is what it is, DC benefits but the Gov't is it's own entity. Whereas NY has power all to it's own and more of it as a city itself

Also in theory NYC and the NY Metro has more representation in Congress than any other place based on population
