I don't find the Spelling mansion ugly... I wouldn't mind living in it!

According to the homes of the rich site, the biggest mansion is in North Carolina. The George W. Vanderbilt estate which is 175,000 sq. ft.
Vanderbilt estate is not a private home. The Hamptons estate is the largest occupied private house in the US.

Are you going to reimburse me for the seconds I wasted clicking on that link?

Bill Gates house is not the largest occupied house in the United States. The Hamptons estate is valued at $203MM, Bill's is valued at $147MM. The Hamptons estate is approximately 110,000 sq ft, Bill Gates' is 60,000 sq ft.

Rennert named his home after the adjoining body of water, Fairfield Pond. The house faces the Atlantic Ocean and its grounds measure 63 acres (250,000 m2). The buildings, which total over 110,000 square feet (10,000 m2), including the 66,000-square-foot (6,100 m2) main house, have an Italianate facade, 29 bedrooms, and 39 bathrooms.
Why did you present me with that link? Please stop wasting my time.

But in the link you posted (Zillow), the Hamptons estate is listed at 43,031 sq. ft.

The Vanderbilt estate is privately owned according to homesoftherich.net. It is still owned by Vanderbilt's descendants.

Zillow is wrong.

According to Suffolk County, NY tax records, the main house is 66,000 sq ft and the total (other wings of the estate, guest house, etc) the home comes out to a whopping 110,000 sq ft.

Does this look like only 43,000 sq ft to you?

Its property taxes in 2007 were $397,559.00. Based on these taxes, the home is currently valued at $198 million[25] making it the most valuable home in the United States.

The Vanderbilt Estate is not occupied as a single family home...it's used as a hotel or resort or something. Nobody lives there.

It did say in the link it depends on which buildings you include. Anyway, the Vanderbilt estate is larger and it is privately-owned.

As for the value, I never said that the Rennert house/mansion was not the highest valued. As I said, there are mansions out here and the mild and good weather that comes with it.

I'm sure you're correct on at least one point ... they are expensive, but they're still tract gahbige polluting an otherwise beautiful environment. I particularly like the shot of the chain link fence surrounding - what - a field with an apple/cherry tree? Pure aesthetic loveliness.

You dont figure guest houses that are not attached to the house. Main house 66,000 sq ft would not be the largest occupied house. Only living space.

these "largest most expensive" houses are so tacky and wasteful. Neither coast should be subjected to that..
