Oakland had its first restaurant week a couple of months ago:
Restaurant Week | OaklandCVB.com
I went to one place. It was good, they did mini portions over a few courses so we got to try a lot, including a rum flight.
What I didn't like, was the uneven pricing and participation, but there were some stellar places on the least. Next time, I'll have to hit one of the destination places. I ended up going somewhere I had been meaning to try.
San Francisco also has one that lasts for a couple of weeks:
San Francisco Dine About Town 2011
This year I didn't make it, but I have in the past. The deal are uniform, but the restaurants hate it. Some places are really small, and not laid out well to handle a big crowd.
All in all I think it is a great idea for every city. It would be fun to have theme weeks too: local ingredients, fusion, bbq, chinese... oh well. Maybe next year.
