San Jose is good for what it is, but I like big cities and big downtowns so Chicago all the way.
This is an extremely apples/oranges comparison -- the downtown of the #3 metro in the country that also completely dominates the local market, vs. a downtown that plays a secondary role in a CSA that's also a bit smaller.
I do give kudos to the Bay Area for using land much more efficiently than Chicagoland, and for dominating an important economic sector.

San Jose has been beating Chicago in surveys across the board: richest city, best place to live, healthiest city, cleanest city, best transportation city, most future ready city and safest city. Chicago loses out all the time when it goes toe to toe with San Jose!
San Jose is the high tech capital of the world and most innovative city in the world. What's Chicago? Agriculture/merchantile exchange?
The architecture is even better in San Jose like the city hall and Samsung. Axis and One South Market residential towers are more attractive from the outside and unique than Chicago's.
Downtown San Jose is well rounded with everything there, nothing missing unlike Chicago's. San Jose has Bart(starts running this year) and light rail with high speed rail coming.

Yes, let's cherry pick certain categories SJ is strong in.
Also, "attractive" is subjective. Someone could just as easily find Chicago's architecture more attractive. It's certainly more iconic and well known than SJ, and that is not subjective.
The average Hawaiian beach would beat Chicago in many ways. That doesn't make it a fair comparison.
San Jose isn't a technical capital. The Bay Area is the technical capital, and that's a function of the whole basin, with SF as much to credit as SJ.
San Jose is the Capital of Silicon Valley.
