There is a lot of talk about how America is diversifying--nowhere is this more evident than in our largest metropolitan areas. To illustrate, below are components of 2000-2010 population change for certain MSAs broken down by race, using data from the 2010 Census and Census 2000. In parentheses for each MSA is the percentage of the total population that each group contributes. I'll add more data periodically.

For those who want to find this data on their own, it can be accessed here: American FactFinder.

You can see how these changes compare with 2009 estimates of similar data here: Interactive: State of Metropolitan America Indicator Map - Brookings Institution - State of Metropolitan America - Brookings Institution

Correction: All these statistics are according to the 2005-2009 American Community Survey data compared to the 2000 census, not from the 2010 US census.

United States - Data Sets - American FactFinder

I can't believe that the Brookings Institution spent any money on even creating the website for something that isn't even completed yet (2010 US census). Oh well, your tax dollars at work!

Actually it looks like the data posted is correct based on the 2010 census. I calculated DFW's on the new data and it came up almost the same (the only difference was I had the White population just under 50% and the Hispanic population a little higher, but that could be bad math on my part). I used the following link:

Databases - Census 2010 in Texas - chron.com - Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/databases/Census2010Texas.html - broken link)

Yeah, but what about the metro area? Those numbers sound about right for the city of Chicago.

Metro Chicago (I'm guessing) is:

62% white (of which, 25% is Polish, 10% is Italian and 15% is Irish)
20% hispanic
15% black
8% Asian
