I think the people who move to Charleston or Savannah completely fall in love with the place, then try their best to adopt the local culture/traditions. If you feel like that is you, then they might be a good choice for you.

The Charleston region is actually full of transplants. There are lots of retirees and young families from the North and Midwest that live in fast-growing suburbs like Summerville and Mount Pleasant.

I lived in Savannah. Was not my cup of tea. Charleston is a little larger in terms of the metro area. I would have rather lived there.

Fort Myers/Cape Coral/Lehigh Acres have tons of unoccupied homes just chillin. I can't see it getting worst, but apparantly the region flopped harder than anyone could imagine. I prefer Tampa.
Savanna and Charelston are great if you're willing to adapt to the cultural change.

I've been to Ft. Myers any number of times and I can't imagine it would be a place where any 25 year old would want to go.

What about Knoxville, TN or Columbia, SC?
Anyone ever been to or lived in either area?

What's the old Sesame Street jingle? One of these things is not like the others...
I find Savannah and Charleston charming; Fort Myers, not so much. FM is very much oriented to retirees;not really à young persons town.
Despite assertions on this forum that Savannah and Charleston are unwelcoming to newcomers, Ive known people that have moved to both and assimilated quite nicely.

Both home to their respective state universities. The area around Knoxville is mountainous and beautiful, but I never found the city itself to be particularly attractive. Columbia, on the other hand, I found to be quite underrated. I loved some of the neighborhoods that I encountered going east on Forest St. out of downtown.

Knoxville recently went a renaissance of sorts. The small downtown has been lovingly restored and quite a happening place for such a small city. I lived in Fort Myers for ten years, on the other hand, and absolutely hated it.

This is an old thread but still, I have never heard anything good about Ft Myers. A friend who lived there for 7 years and owned a home for 5 was transferred to Nashville. She lost $200,000 on the value of the house -- practically the entire cost of what she paid for it. Quite literally, it was worth NOTHING when she finally had to sell. She essentially just gave it back to the bank and is a renter again. The state of Florida has ruined a lot of people's dreams.
