So, I've been looking at different neighborhoods in Seattle (preparing for a move up there from Los Angeles) and a couple of people will mention that an area is "sketchy"... I'm trying to get an idea of sketchy in Seattle is equivalent to sketchy in Los Angeles... One of the areas I've heard described as a little tough is Pioneer Square, but then again I've heard people describe Korea Town in Los Angeles the same way and as a small, single white chick who drives a fancy car, I never had a problem when I was living there.

So, be honest, what are the neighborhoods that are actually unsafe for a single woman and where is it not okay to park a car... I'm going to be attending the UW, so I'm mostly interested in the Wallingford/Green Lake/Ballard/Fremont (and potentially Queen Anne/Belltown) areas.

I don't personally consider Pioneer Square sketchy, at least, anymore. It's mostly touristy now although certain parks do still have a homeless problem.
I can't give very good info on the other neighborhoods ,but overall Seattle's murder rate in 2010 was the lowest it's been since 1956. Car theft is still a big problem citywide but even it has come down in recent years.

I hear people say Greenlake has car prowler problems.

Try the often overlooked Roosevelt neighborhood situated between Greenlake and the UW campus.
They have a great Whole Foods there.

The only area of Seattle where I'd be afraid to park a car is parts of Rainier Valley. I'd expect it to be gone, or have some parts missing when I returned.
Still, the chances of that happening are pretty low compared to many areas of L.A., and they same could happen anywhere. It's just the appearance of that area of Seattle that makes one nervous. I use a parking garage in Belltown daily for work and while no one has ever bothered mine, we have had a few car prowls lately, yet it seems really safe. You just can't tell.

here's a graphical representation of the two cities. We seem to have a lot of property crimes, while L.A. has shootings.

Funny thing was my car was broke into at the maplewood golf and country club for a work party. Much nicer area haha I was safer in the hood . Actually Seattle dosen't have hoods like other cities I would fill safe at any arfea in Seattle the bad areas are in the burbs.
