In NYC the main two are 212 and 917. 646 used to mean that you were new to the city, 718 is established outer borough residents and 347, I really don't acknowledge this area code just yet as I have not come across a lot people with them. But it seems area code prestige here is losing importance, as people have other things to worry about.

Back in the days of rotary dials, if anyone remembers them, 212 would have been the quickest 3-digit area code to dial. A zero would take much longer.

But I go back so far as to remember times before area codes or even dial phones. Growing up, my number (complete) was 5785M. No dial phone, you had to pick up a phone, get an operator, and tell the operator the phone number you were calling, even for a local phone. If you were calling long distance, you had to give the name of the city and state as well as the number, and it took a while to go through. You can see that in old movies.

But now I'm in 415.

I'd say that, because of rap, the most popularly known area codes are 404 and 305. Sorry NYC.

New Orleans is "Da 504". The surrounding parishes (counties) are 985, one of the newer ones.
