I dare anyone who says Houston is not southern to come chat up a native black/white or even hispanic Houstonian. All of them have southern twangs, and all of them are always fixin' to do somethin'
To be fair. You can get a southern twang in the Midwestern cities amongst Blacks as well and they all say fixin' and fitna too. But I've never met a native Hispanic from Houston with a southern twang and I've met many of them. Too many as a matter of fact. Most of their dialect and accent was neutral if not broken.

you must not have been talking to native or you may have been talking to those from upper middle class back grounds. I have only taught disadvantaged kids from Pasadena, Galena Park 5th ward etc. Hispanic, White, blue, green they all had heavy southern accents. Even the ones whose parents could not speak English.

Anyway, i am not saying that mid western blacks don't sound southern, the two that Polo posted just were not good representatives.

The ones I have talked to are from South Park ,Sunnyside, and many other neighborhoods on the Southside and none of them had Southern accents. That said, Hispanics with Southern accents probably do exist in Houston as they were influenced by Blacks and Whites that had original Southern accents.

Some of the blacks in Dallas are not country, they just pronounce words very WRONG.

Dallas = Dellez
South Oak Cliff = Souf O Cliff
Library = lieberry
Maryland = Merland
There's a grocery store in Dallas called Minyard. It's pronounced Minyerd. Min is pronounced like mini. The black people in Dallas call it Min-YARD. They say it just like the yard in the front of your house.
