I've never been to Houston, but as they are all centers of their regions they will tend to feel larger than they are even though they are already huge. And what I mean by that is that they pretty much have everything to offer that a larger metro like LA, SF, or NYC might have. It's not like you miss out on any concerts, sports, culture, etc by living in one of those metros. They have everything.

But as far as whether they look as big as NYC, Chicago or LA, not really. Especially not NYC or LA or if you focus on downtown, not Chicago. But they have what those cities have for the most part whether they look like it or not.

So even though it's Metro is considerably smaller than Atlanta, Houston or Dallas. It still has a lot of the things that those cities have like all the major sports, a very large airport, a large bustling downtown (although with considerably fewer skyscrapers than the other cities.), etc.

I think if a Metro it's size were located in Texas or the Midwest or Florida even it wouldn't have a lot of what it does because of competition from other nearby major cities.
I think that Denver probably has more to offer than any metro it's size,so in that regard it feels bigger, but it doesn't look as big as Atlanta or Dallas. It's more like Sacramento but with all of the cultural and entertainment features of Atlanta or Dallas.

^^^Yeah true. I also didn't feel the busiest parts of Denver were as busy and hectic as the busiest parts of Atlanta with the exception of their Downtown. So you could tell it was smaller but someone only paying attention to a couple parts of both cities might not notice that.

I can remember the very first time I visited Houston I felt engulfed & overwhelmed it was so freaking massive. Now I know it like the back of my hand after living there for 5 years.

It takes what seems like forever to get from one side of town to the next. Some people who have lived there all of their lives never venture beyond their side of town. Theres no need to really because everything is right there.

For example, I lived on the Northwest side & everything I could possibly want or need was within a short driving distance. I never had to go down South for anything.

Houston freeway grid probably is why some feel it feels larger. DFW freeway grid is one of the Weirdest looking in the country. There isn't a loop that can take you all the way around DFW. Houston does have a loop that does that. Than again some might feel the bi-polarness of DFW makes it feel larger. Its all a matter of opinion.

Bipolar metros never feel bigger.

look at metros of similar sizes-
DC, Miami, ATL- from those three DC clearly feels the largest because it is more concentrated in the center, followed by Miami and then ATL.

Maybe I am in the minority but to me they do not feel larger than they are. The expanse all feels suburban; I can drive through suburbs for hundreds of miles in the north east and their cores seem small to me and give way to non core very quickly. I guess it is just a different perspective but highways to me always feel like I am in the burbs. I have always felt that the burbs are the areas away from the city that connect to the next city; I guess it is just a differnt perspective. Now LA feels huge and expansive; Houston to me large but not huge like LA and about what I would expect in terms of size for a metro of 6 million.
