Hello all! Here's the short and sweet: Getting ready to retire (early, at 55), and find I am longing to return to the land of my roots (the Midwest). The reasons for this are simple: I'm tired of living in the big city, tired of the road rage, etc., and want to live in a real community again (i.e., a place where people are friendly and treat each other like neighbors). On top of that, I'm a hiker, runner, and Nordic (cross-country) skier, so being near public lands (state or national forests) and trails is a must.

I've only recently "discovered" the Driftless Region of Wisconsin (I'd actually never heard of it before; isn't the internet wonderful?), and it sounds intriguing. Viroqua sounds like a great place. And Wausau seems to have an incredibly active and fun Nordic ski club, from what I glean from their online newsletters.

The Traverse City area of Michigan, and perhaps Petoskey/Harbor Springs as well, also seems like a good place. I love the TART trail grooming videos on YouTube, as well as other videos of people skiing those trails. I'm wary of resort areas though (we have plenty of them here in Colorado).

Please, no responses questioning why I'm even considering leaving Colorado. Read the Wausau Nordic Ski club's online newsletters, and then understand that there's nothing like that here in the greater Denver metropolis.

Any input from residents on either side of the lake would be most welcome! Thanks!
