I like both of these cities alot, IMO they both have somethings in common such as population, both river cities, both are inland cities, and both have IMO lots of charm and nice settings so here is the criteria:
Best utilizes the river front
Downtown activity
Education
Architecture
Food
Housing stock
Diversity
Transportation
Parks
Bridges (I know that Pittsburgh has more but what I am asking is which city has the nicest looking ones)
Portland is better than any city on the east coast.
i've never been to portland and am not familiar enough with the city to feel comfortable voting... i'd be interested to see how this turns out. pittsburgh is a really underated city.
and although i've never been to portland, this statement is obviously absurd.
I like both of these cities alot, IMO they both have somethings in common such as population, both river cities, both are inland cities, and both have IMO lots of charm and nice settings so here is the criteria:
Best utilizes the river front Portland, although Pittsburgh does well
Downtown activity Portland
Education Pittsburgh for its higher education
Architecture Pittsburgh
Food Pittsburgh, probably
Housing stock Pittsburgh, although Portland holds its own
Diversity Hmmmm....probably Pittsburgh by slight margin
Transportation Portland, hands down!
Parks Portland
Bridges (I know that Pittsburgh has more but what I am asking is which city has the nicest looking ones) Pittsburgh
So, why did I vote for Portland, anyway? I like the vibe and people of the Pacific Coast better than of Appalachia. Oregon is much greener year-round, although that is attributable to the more constant light rain and drizzling. Pitt, w/ its deciduous trees, has barren looking hillsides for about five months of the year and, combined with winter fog and cloudiness, can make for one of the most depressing places on earth.

There are some categories that Pittsburgh ties and beats Portland in(while there are categories Portland beats Pittsburgh in) but I still pick Portland overall. This is because I still like the vibe of Portland more overall and its location(In the West/Pacific Northwet) instead of the Midwest/Appalachia/Rust Belt that Pittsburgh is in.

Best utilizes the river front - Portland on this one
Downtown activity - Really close, I give the edge to Portland, but Pittsburgh is right behind
Education - definitely Pittsburgh. Carnegie Mellon anyone?
Architecture - Pittsburgh by far again
Food - I guess Portland, I'm not a big fain of asian food though
Housing stock - Pittsburgh
Diversity - LOL. Portland is like 85% white. Is this even a fair comparison?
Transportation - Pittsburgh on this one
Parks - Portland
Bridges (I know that Pittsburgh has more but what I am asking is which city has the nicest looking ones) - Pitt, portland's are pretty ugly IMO.
They're comparing Pittsburgh with Portland, Oregon.
