But there's no one source that's universally accepted when it comes to this; that's why I'm not dogmatic about it. Does the part of the South east of the Mississippi include states like Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia, for example?
Right. What about West Tennessee vs. Middle and Eastern Tennessee? I'd argue that West TN could be considered the Southeast, but the Metro Memphis area and the areas surrounding it are often marketed as the "Mid-South." Are Middle and Eastern TN considered the Southeast, the Upper South, or both ?
Maryland, Delaware, and WV are far too north to be considered the Southeast, to me, and too many people debate about them being in the South anyhow.

If those states were in the Confederacy then there is no objective reason not to include them in "the South". If said states are east of the Mississippi then they are the Southeast. Plain and simple.

I'm pretty sure you're aware that they weren't, yet all are considered Southern by the Census Bureau. People may disagree with all or some of those states being classified as such, but at the least it's an official source.
^^ THIS...Maryland is a tiny state, but packs a lot of punch per square mile due to the subregions it covers. Hence the threads about the differences between Baltimore, suburban DC, and the surrounding areas that have other subcultures. It's a fascinating place.
it is interesting how such a small state incorporates so many subcultures.

Your dogmatism isn't serving you well here.
Actually I had forgotten, but if the CB counts those states as the South, then, according to them, they are also the Southeast.
I don't care about that ten dollar word. I'm right.

And they aren't the only source on geography. Other federal agencies place those states in other regions, and most folks in MD and DE don't consider themselves to be Southerners or to live in the South, so there's that.

Nope, I'm right. You're just peddling fake news.
