Bloomberg left the republican party... He is also the 7th richest person in the United States, not exactly a typical mayor. A republican in NYC or Boston is not going to be like republicans in IL or Minnesota like Michelle Bachman or something. They are often just running in it to get a slot on the ticket.

Outside of the fact that Weiner is in last place, and has no chance in hell at the mayorality, wouldn't this be a mark in NYC's favor?

If their politicans in NYC are so crappy, imagine how great NYC would be if they actually had decent politicans! They're already arguably the greatest city in the planet.

It's deflecting because you made an outrageous claim that tourism is bad for NYC and Chicago will do better with less tourism then responded to my argument with a bit about Anthony Weiner.

You stick with worrying about Chicago's crime and I'll worry about NYC's mayoral election.

Anyway, maybe if you lived in this region like I do and got NYC area news coverage, you'd know that Weiner is not popular and probably won't win for a few reasons.

Weiner is not going to win the mayor race no more than Donald Trump is going to win the presidency.

When was the last time the NYC Democratic Regime voted in a President??

Chicago's machine did so twice in the last ten years......not that this benefited Chicago, it just benefited its Machine Democrats.

as much as I'd prefer to compare the two cities architecture, streetscape, culture, theater...etc...

Obama's rise does hint a bit at Chicago's political power, no?

Can't argue that. The midwest machine and union politics are still strong.

and just in case I am misunderstood...

there is a difference between observing what is, and what "should be"

Chicago has always wielded national political power, it doesn't wield international political power like DC or NYC though.

.
The great thing about America is that "power" is totally dispersed. Chicago has as much power as it needs or deserves.......so does a place like Cincinnati, headquarters of P&G.....and then there is Seattle, home of Starbucks, Microsoft, Costco, and Amazon....

or Detroit....GM!!!, Ford

or the Bay Area......home of the globally important SILICON VALLEY....home to facebook, apple, google etc etc etc

or Houston, the "world's energy capital?"

I love New York, but it really needs an attitude adjustment, it isn't all that, it is tiny in terms of its influence "within America/vis-a-vis other countries"

And Chicago ain't all that either....but at least we have a better perspective.
