You can check the median income, every north NJ county is at least above the US average, some roughly the same, others much higher. I'm rather puzzled how people are painting North NJ as poor.

Northern NJ is one of the wealthiest parts of the United States. Anyone claiming otherwise needs to consult the official U.S. Census data.

So are Chicago suburbs, since Gary is there. Newark: at least we're not Gary!

I take Newark over Gary anytime. Especially since Newark has Ironbound with some of the best Portuguese and Brazilian restaurants in the world.

Anyways, besides a few trolls most people know that NYC suburbs are some of the most affluent locations in the nation, that applies to NJ and CT as well. Don't feed the trolls.

Northern NJ is wealthy. It can't also be full of slums. That doesn't even make any sense. Northern NJ is the richest part of the state.

If an area is wealthy, it isn't usually thought of as "slums".

And please don't compare Newark to Gary. Newark is 10,000 times better. For one Newark is growing, and has been growing for many years. Even Chicago can't claim this. Newark draws lots of immigrants, and there is some gentrification. It has a subway system, a real downtown, highrise construction, and density, Gary has basically nothing.

For another, there are many nice neighborhoods in Newark (Ironbound, Forest Hill, University Heights). And it's all 8-10 miles from Manhattan.

Gary is HUGE...it sprawls along some 20 miles of Lake Michigan, including a 6 mile beach, part of which is a National Park. It arguably has the best views over water of a skyline anywhere in the country. It also has one of the most beautiful city parks in the Midwest, Marquette Park.

And yes, it has the country's largest steel mill...this I think is COOL. Without steel modern life would be impossible...kiss your skyscrapers good-bye. Some on this board act like three-year old kids seeing a snake when they see industry. Grow a pair...

It also has casinos, a growing arts district, and it is arguably the nexus of the North American highway/train system. It also has an airport that is currently undergoing a major runway expansion. And crime/violence while still high, is down considerably.

And there are signs that its decades-long population decline has just about ended. The new Mayor is a very forward-looking woman and is intent on turning the city around. Indiana University Northwest is growing and building, and is partnering with the new Mayor to rejuvenate the urban district of Glen Park.

Believe it or not, but Gary is poised for a shocking turnaround in the coming decade or so. Mark my words.

Here's a hiking trail in the National Park...in Gary...which leads to a 6-mile beach with stunning views of the skyline..
But sure, nothing to see in Gary.......
