1.Architechture- NYC has the best buildings and architecture as far as being famous and a Global Icon ( remeber 9/11 even the terroist know NYC)
2.Buildings/skyline- NYC has so many more buildings than Chicago and a much Handsome skyline.
3.History- NYC obviously has more history than chicago.
4.Media- does chicago ever have TV shows filmed there or TV Headquaters (well they have some but there boring and NYC Has more examples Today show, The View, Good moring America, Colbert Report,
and other, TV shows and headquaters they own Viacom which is a big TV Organization)
5.Population/people- chicago cant even beat L.A. and I find people in chicago boring.

7.overall fame- nobody even speaks of chicago unless they live there you never here it in everyday news are anything you only here chicago when some one talks about cities with the biggest buildings. NYC is heard everywhere around the Globe
8.Music- well this depends on you taste of music but NYC wins hands down.
The OP clearly stated that he was only referring to skylines. This is not a "which city is better thread." So points 3-8 are totally irrelevant to the discussion.
Architecturally wise I don't think many would list NYC as the winner in that category. NYC is known for its massive skyline. It's skyline is awe inspiring because of its sheer size and density. Aesthetically Chicago IMO has a much more appealling and dynamic skyline. Its also the birthplace of the skyscraper and home to the country's tallest building.

There have been plenty of studies that place Chicago far above any other city for architecture. In fact Chicago has students from around the world that come here to study.
New York City may have more buildings, so?
Chicago does have movies/shows based there. Totally unrelated but has anyone seen the new Batman movie? I love the setting.
What do you mean Chicago can't beat Los Angeles? At what?
I guess that from your years of living everywhere, Chicago, all over the US and other countries that you have come to this conclusion.
New York has Harlem, other than that New York doesn't have much to claim fame to.

Actually 1-3 are find, because NYC has alot of historical buildings and landmarks with of course history to them.

The Chicago Spire will be 2000' the Dynamic Tower would be less than 1400'. There probably would be mechanical failures and who wants that?
The chicago spire sticks out of the skyline as if it doesnt even belong there. In NY they build buildings that goes with the rest of the skyline.
