The extremes balance each other out. DC is no where comparable to SF statistically. SF has 250k+ the pop of DC and has 80-100 homicides on a VERY bad year....DC had 132 last year which was the all time lowest since 1963.....

Of course DC has a higher murder rate than SF, but let's be accurate when it comes to the stats for SF. A "VERY bad year" for murders in SF is not 80-100 murders, if we're going by standards from the past few decades....here are the 25 worst years for murder in SF since the 60s:

1977 - 142 (~21/100,000)
1975 - 135
1976 - 131
1974 - 131
1993 - 129 (17.5/100,000)
1969 - 122 (~17/100,000)
1981 - 121 (17.3/100,000)
1992 - 117
1986 - 114 (15.2/100,000)
1978 - 113
1970 - 112
1979 - 108
1980 - 107
1982 - 106
1995 - 105
1973 - 104
1987 - 103
1990 - 101
2007 - 100 (13.6/100,000)
2008 - 99
1971 - 98
2005 - 96
1991 - 95
1988 - 92
1994 - 91

By the way, violent crime is down across the nation including many of these cities.
FBI — Crime Rates Fall Again
As one who lives in the Lansing area I am surprised to see it toping the list at 24. Although the city does have its share of crime I would expect to see Saginaw Michigan rank 3rd after Flint and Detroit.

Glad to see that Chicago didn't make the list, but where is Gary, Indiana?

Not to mention D.C. has Prince George's County, Maryland.
I don't know any other U.S. suburb as big as PG county that has a crime and murder rate as high as PG county's.
This year its looking onwards of having more murders than D.C.
Forreal of you think about it DC/PG is the worst. combine NE and SE DC and western PG county and you have the highest murder rate in the country right now no lie.

The Bay Area has high crime suburbs too, not to mention the city of Oakland is right next to SF...but i see your point. PG County seems to be pretty crime-ridden for an ENTIRE county, let alone a county that is solely full of suburbs. No suburban county in the Bay even comes close to matching PG county for murder rate, that's for sure.

few murder rates

Flint
total = 53
rate = 51.7

New Orleans
total =175
rate = 50.8

St Louis
total = 144
rate = 45.0

Detroit
total = 310
rate = 43.4

Baltimore
total = 223
rate = 35.9

Newark
total = 90
rate = 32.4

I did these using the census numbers for 2010, the FBI does not use census numbers so these are not the official rates.

Suprised to see Lansing on the list as well. Born and raised here in Lansing, never really had a problem.

I've heard about Prince George's County near D.C., and it's high crime rate. Is it more "ghetto", or more poor-rural type crime.

PG county is isn't rural in the areas that are ghetto.
The rural parts are the richest.
Hoods in PG county mainly consist of apartment complexes, townhouse co-ops, with some just having single family homes. Its not as urban as the city but I wouldn't call it country either, just suburban.
