There used to be at least one Big Boy concession on the NJ Turnpike. At least THAT was worth a stop. But the trip kind of makes you wonder how they came up with the name "Garden State."

I agree completely

They didnt build I-55 to be a scenic highway.
that's what so nice about I-44 W, you don't have to get off of the highway. The rolling hills and the rock formations occupy the scene for quite a stretch. Very scenic, imo.

We don't.

The drive on 55 is nothing but rolling hills, with very big hills in Jefferson County. And there are rock formations all along the highway. Here's the massive one just South of St. Louis that always let's me know that I'm almost there

The google maps streeview is a little better. You can go from that^ to the Arch in 30 minutes.

The I-55 drive is definitely 2nd to the I-44, but it's much better than I-70. 70 is prairie all the way from St Louis to Kansas City, whereas 44 & 55 go through the Ozarks. There are even rock formations along 270 in St. Louis, but I don't remember seeing any along 70.

Thank you, I was looking for just that image to post!
This is just south of Festus, MO, heading south on I-55, as you get past the crest of the hill, the whole hill falls away, and one can see rolling hills for miles.
Particularly stunning in the fall, the drive from Festus south to Perry County is all just like this.
BTW, how did you get the streetview to do that?
There is a stunning stretch of road between Ste Gen and Bloomsdale, its on Establishment Creek, couldnt get it to load.
Theres another area, just south of Ste Gen, at the Ozora exit, where the River aux Vases empties into Eisenbeis Bottoms that stunning as well.
Yes, I know the area like the back of my hand.

Yeah I love it, I had to take a pic. It feels like a canyon when you're driving through it.

I found the 2nd place you're talking about because I remember it very well from my trips
Ste. Genevieve, MO - Google Maps

The streetview doesn't do it justice

You're speaking as if Philly isn't a dump.

I didn't see rock formations on 270 until the I-44 exchange near Fenton/Wentzville?

You guys have an aversion to 44 or something? It has rock formations along it as well..... along with the rolling hills, en-route to Six Flags. I guess I'm just more familiar with 44, than 55.

Nevertheless, it all supports my thinking that states/regions that are typically considered "flyover country" actually have areas that are worth driving thru.

70 has some nice topography between about Marshall and Booneville. You go through to some nice rock cuts and cross the Missouri river in that corridor.

The rest of 70 across MO sucks though. I would even say Kansas is better because MO is so cluttered up with small town signage, highway ads, truck stops etc.
