Familiar with both states. Keep in mind: This is New York STATE, not just NYC. I know some of my views won't go over well with some, but here it is:

Weather- California. Though California has great weather, it also has the worst natural disasters in the nation (earthquakes, wildfires, droughts, and mudslides).

Quality of life- New York. With housing being so out of reach for the overwhelming majority of CA, that brings down the QOL down a good bit.

Traffic- New York

Restaurants/Food and Shopping- California

Career Opportunities- California

ML Sports- California

Scenery- California. Upstate NY is very beautiful. But as a whole, I have to give it to CA. Topographically, the most diverse state in the nation.

Cleanliness- New York

Entertainment- California

Singles Scene- California

Cost of living- New York. NYC's is very high, but the rest of the state is pretty affordable. CA is pretty much across-the-board very expensive.

Crime- New York. Upstate NY has some of the safest metros in the nation.

Location within the United States- New York. Much closer to other population centers than CA.

Residents- New York. Upstate NY has some wonderfully friendly people. Places like Albany, Rochester, and Syracuse has a "small town" friendliness that's really refreshing.

Which is your personal Paradise? Neither. Both clearly have their merits, but "paradise" is a bit pretentious that's based mostly on TV images than fact.

Many who have posted, IMO, put way too much emphasis on size. Alaska has enormous land size and Japan has enormous population size, but that doesn't equate to quality. Size seem to impress more than it should.

California hands down. Outside of NYC, NY State isn't all that great.

Weather- CA

Quality of life- CA

Traffic- NY

Restaurants/Food and Shopping- Who cares...

Career Opportunities- NY

ML Sports- CA

Scenery- CA

Cleanliness- NY

Entertainment- CA

Singles Scene- NY

Cost of living- NY

Crime- NY

Location within the United States- CA

Residents- NY

Anything else you'd like to add- NYC beats any city in CA, but as a state CA beats NY easily. Even though I scored this for NY, the categories that CA wins are the more important ones.

Neither is a personal paradise though. CA might have come close in the 50s-60s, but it is too crowded, expensive and smoggy now

California overall is better than New York State. California have San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Long Beach, San Jose, Mountains, Hills, Ski resorts, Nice Beaches, Snow in mountains, Deserts, Caves, Disneyland, Beaches town with scenery views, more things to do, better weather

New York State has NYC, Fingerlakes, Ausable Chasm, Mohonk Mountain, Whiteface Mountain Steps, State parks with cliffs, waterfalls, ski resorts, Adirondack Mountains

NYS has caves, beaches with scenic views, hills and other cities/towns as well, among other things. It is just smaller in land size and population, but for being 30th in land size, it really packs a big punch.

That’s fair, but NY also has ocean and lake beaches. So, there may be more beach variety actually in NY.
