Which state is the most historical, prosperous, varied landscape, and well-rounded in all aspects of life, Massachusetts or Virginia?

Virginia has better BBQ, landscape. Massachusetts has more historic stuff, and I love the Italian / Irish culture there.

Virginia covers a much larger area. While both have a varied landscape, Virginia is more varied with terrain ranging from coastal plains to Mountains in the west. It has built up touristy coastline (VA Beach), quiet, peaceful coastline (Eastern Shore), Urban areas (Norfolk, Richmond and parts of NoVa) and many rural areas. While summer can be brutal in Virginia, I think most would argue that the climate overall is better than Massachusetts. I think Massachusetts has historical sites in a more compact setting, but it's hard to knock VA in that regard with places like Old Town Alexandria, Arlington National Cemetery, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Jamestown, etc. MA has better public transit and is better connected to other large urban areas.

I prefer MA personally, but I would have a hard time arguing that Virginia doesn't fit the OP's criteria better.

Virginia, although I think Mass has a better quality of life, especially if you are gay!

It's a toss up. Both are drenched in history. I think VA beats Mass for geography and cost of living. It also has Boston. Virginia has DC next door, but it's not Boston. It just depends on personal preference.

Mass is more historical, educated and affluent, althoough the DC suburbs are right up there. VA has a much larger area, which makes it more of a varied landscape. Overall, MA.

That's extremely debatable. Frankly, I find it a bit hard to pick one over the other in this regard. Some might give the leg up to MA because of Boston and its status as one of the larger cities early in our nation's history, but that does little to discount VA's historical importance.
