I think you're right in terms of perception, but anyone who's been to neighborhoods like Queen Village/Bella Vista, Northern Liberties, Fishtown, Kensington and areas of West Philly knows that there is a very tangible hipster presence in Philly.
It may not be as large of a proportion of the overall city population as cities like SF, Portland or Seattle, but there's still a strong element here.
There is is Reason Philly isn't a Hipster haven, in the 90s (when Hipsters where growing up) Philly was still Down in the dumps, While San Francisco was on the upswing due to the Dotcom boom, so it was seen as cool when they where growing up so more people where inclined to move to SF, while Philly started the trend 7-12 years later so the Hipsters (yuppies whatever) are not in Full swing yet

Actually there is a decent size population for better or worse, especially in the areas Duderino referenced, as a percentage not as high but in raw numbers pretty significant
Believe it or not hipsters move from Brooklyn to Philly, and also vice versa

I know but they are more prevelant in SF because people veiw Philly today (sizable minority think its crappy) as people viewed SF 7-8 years ago, so Phillys not as far along

Not sure if any time in recent there was such a perception of SF honestly.
Philly battles a perception issue; but more than enough of all types see it as a non issue
Absolutely more prevelant, agree. Philly has a larger poverty and working class population but would guess the hipster demographic is larger in raw numbers than you might expect; again not saying good or bad but you might actually be surprised. One thing about Philly is it is larger; so even with much lower precentages there are a lot of many different incarnations

I agree, Philly is on a good upswing that should continue. San Francisco hasnt had a down period like that, unless you count the 70s where every major urban city had problems, but even then, not the same.

There definitely was/is that perception in regards to SF, but I've found that it's by far most prevalent among suburban Northern Californians, as well as conservatives who learned everything they know of SF from fox news (seriously, a few years ago I saw a fox news special report with Bill O'Reilly, talking about what a horribly crime-ridden, crazy, and immoral place SF supposedly is).
The vast majority of people besides those groups seem to have no strong opinion on SF being crime-ridden/gritty/"too diverse", or they erroneously think it's the 100% white/asian/gay/hipster/yuppie Disneyland McVanillaville on a mountain (with hippies), where criminals only steal hugs and sing kumbaya.

Hahaha! Well done. I swear there are some people around here who actually think that...
so if its not gritty and its not vanilla, then what is it?
