Here's a different Southwestern thread as most attention go's to Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, or Albuquerque.

For small to medium sized Southwestern cities which of these do you prefer?

Santa Fe, NM
Flagstaff, AZ
St. George, UT
Las Cruces, NM

Here some criteria to go on, or you base your own as well.

-Climate

-Best college town

-Access to recreation

-Most scenic setting

-Best downtown and local character

Flagstaff is a like a little slice of Colorado in AZ. I've always imagined Santa Fe to be really awesome, probably giving Flagstaff a run for it's money.

I've never even heard anything about St. George, except that young men who get kicked out of the polygamists in Colorado City always end up there.

Las Cruces seems like the odd man out in this group because it's hot desert and anyone who is all about Flag or SF isn't going to be a desert person.

I would've included Prescott in this list, though I wouldn't have voted for it.

Having never been to SF, I'll pick Flagstaff.

Santa Fe, hands down. Best food, best people, best scenery, best mountains...you get the point.

btw, Santa Fe's the only place I've been to on that list, but have no desire to go to any of them, however, Las Cruces would be worth a visit...

As a matter of fact, I have. In more ways than you can ever imagine.

Las Cruces is not a interesting place. Their downtown is a decay, and brings NO college town feeling to it whatsoever.

Yeah downtown Las Cruces needs more life (though the Farmers Market is very cool). I wouldn't write the whole city off though, Old Mesilla has a lot of charm and it's setting by the Organ Mountains is one of the most scenic in all of NM.

Mesilla is great, but if that is the only charm of LC, then that's sad. The newer parts of Las Cruces are to brag about, beautiful homes with views of the Organs.
