I wish they didn't include all the tiny areas. Like Poplar Hills Kentucky looks impressive with the 17,000 ppsm density then you see that it is only 0.02 sq miles and a total pop of 300.

was looking for places with more than just some hirise condos. that is why I set the limit to 100k.

thanks for the list though. I scanned it looking for prospects but only found Hialeah and Miami, but when I double checked the official numbers, Miami is still more dense than Hialeah.

Anyway I was able to rule out all cities with densities above 10M. Only Boston fits that category. Boston and Cambridge needs to work some sorta deal out maybe form BosRidge lol.

So far we have ruled out:

NY
Chicago
Houston
Philly
Miami
Atlanta
San Francisco
Detroit
Seattle
Minneapolis
St Louis
Tampa
Baltimore
Denver
Pittsburgh
Portland
San Antonio (doubt its burbs crack 1000ppsm)
Cincinnati
Cleveland

anybody know about DC, San Diego, Sacramento or anywhere else I missed??
Olmos Park 3,860
Alamo Heights 3,964
Leon Valley 2,708
Windcrest 2,808
to name a few

Depends on what part of DC. Is sure seems like density drops when cross into the District from Silver Spring or Bethesda. Maybe it's just an illusion.

At about 90,000 permanent residents, Miami Beach is more densely populated than Miami proper. As a side note, the 90,000 doesn't include the thousands (if not tens of thousands) of seasonal residents that are officially counted elsewhere.

Cary isn't as densely populated as its core city of Raleigh but, in a recent count, it was more densely populated than Charlotte. I am not sure if that statistic still holds true but the two are pretty close.

none of those crack 10,000 people and are far closer to subdivisions than cities

alamo heights is a 2 sq mile area with about 7000 people.

leon valley has 9,000 people in about 3.5 sq miles

windcrest only has 5,000 people in 2sq miles

Yeah Miami seems to have a lot of areas comparable in density to the city itself.

*-unsure if city could really be considered a "suburb" or even exburb. Could be a principle city in its own right.

I did not include a number of cities within metropolitan areas that could be considered principle population centers (i.e. Hampton and Newport News in the Norfolk area -- even though they are technically smaller than, say Chesapeake). I will leave that up to individuals that know the areas better to consider whether or not those places are suburbs of a main city, or a distinct part of it. Other examples would include Fort Lauderdale and Tacoma, because although they are much smaller than the principle city, they are almost often noted as a distinct part or district.

I also had a little bit of a dilemma with the California metros/combined metros. I chose to lump all of the Bay area suburbs together, rather than try to split them between San Fran/Oakland and San Jose...and I decided to list the Inland Empire separately from Los Angeles, even though Los Angeles remains the dominant city in the region (can you really define San Bernardino and Riverside as suburbs?). Still, other cities that are in the CSA might be considered suburbs of LA rather than whatever their own MSA suggests. I'm not familiar enough to make that call.

Anyhow, I came across a few possibilities as far as suburbs that might qualify as more dense than the core city. I'll look through the density numbers and revisit that later (or, if someone wants to review the list and do it for me, that would be fine, too ).

awesome list +1

there should be interesting prospects in there.

The Woodlands in Houston should be making the list soon (if it becomes a city) It is near 100K and the density is near Houston's.
