I go there for home decorating,(used to go for)stationary and other things. When I travel somewhere or send gifts to out of towners, I try to send something that is exclusive to the Bay Area and Gump's is one of the places I go to for more upscale things.
The second largest Bloomingdale's store is located on Market Street in San Francisco and the front facade(which is the entrance to SF Shopping Center) maintains the 'wedding cake' architecture of victorian SF.
The opposite entrance on Mission Street however, is quite contemporary in its design. An interesting contrast:

Isn't Macy's in San Francisco the 2nd largest department store in the US... right behind the Macy's in NYC?
Well, I used to think State Street Macy's in Chicago was bigger until I came across another article which puts Macy's Union Square SF at 975,000 sq ft of retail space which would make it 2nd to Macy's Herald Square in NYC.

You're right! Can't believe I forgot that. I was just trying to list stores in the retail core area because branching out to SLU and Belltown made too many to list! Should have added that one though.
OK here's what I did. In Google maps, I zoomed into the city centers of Minneapolis, New York, San francisco, Chicago and San Francisco. Same zoom level, 1000 ft/inch. I panned the map to avoid water but include the CBD and the urban core in general. Then I Google searched 'store'. Here are the results. The actual numbers might fluctuate a bit from search to search.
1. NYC - 71,805
2. L.A. - 13,922
3. San Francisco - 12,800
4. Chicago - 9,818
5. Philly - 6,700
6. MNPLS/STPL - 2,700
Apologies in advance to anyone who thinks the search was too broad, doesn't like my methodology, or who wanted their city in the list.
This is a bit odd. For starters, Minneapolis and St. Paul each have their own downtown areas.
Using your method Minneapolis has 2,785, St. Paul has 2,419 and San Antonio has 2,388.
