Hi, I’d like to get several varied opinions on where people think I should move. I've done a ton of research for numerous months, but I'm still unsure of exactly where to go next.
Here's a little bit about myself: Some of the things I love are Computers, Gadgets/Electronics, Photography, Cinematography, Sci-Fi and Fantasy stuff, Nature/Hiking/Exploring, and Video Games. I'm a heterosexual 33 year old agnostic SWM (although considering how long my past couple of long-term relationships lasted you might as well consider me a DWM), no kids (hopefully someday though). I own one small dog. I have my A+ Computer Technician certification and I also do a little bit of web design and photography on the side. Although I have quite a bit of college experience I do not actually have my degree (for reasons that would take too long to explain here). I'm laid back and easy going. I have very long hair which seems to upset a lot of conservative types of people. All politicians are evil, but when it comes down to picking the lesser evil I’m more often than not a Democrat. My skin can't tolerate too much sun (red hair, I’m incapable of getting a suntan, only sunburns) and I definitely prefer cooler temperatures (but not freezing temps). My Myers-Briggs personality type used to always come out as INTP in the distant past but for the past several years it has consistently been INFP.
I currently live in southern Minnesota. I've done a lot of research online and find that the west coast seems like a much better match for my personality and lifestyle. California isn't an option due to reasons I won't go into here, so I'm seriously considering either Oregon or Washington State (I’d love all the nature and being able to easily visit the ocean, also I love rain). However, I’m completely open to suggestions as long as it’s in the USA (I’m not in a financial position to move outside of the country, so I’m not even considering that). In fact, since I'm seriously considering Oregon or Washington I'd prefer you talk about other places so I can broaden my possibilities further (although feel free to express your thoughts on either of those). I’d like to live close enough to a big city (e.g. Seattle) to find more jobs, but not actually live inside it, so most likely somewhere in the ‘burbs. I'd really like somewhere that will embrace my nerdy/geeky side more than where I am now (especially single women -- hmm, is that asking too much?).
There is one more consideration; I will be moving my elderly disabled mother with me (as there is no other family and I refuse to leave her all alone). She has a small fixed income. She has M.S. among many other conditions and something we’re considering is moving somewhere she can try medical marijuana. Under normal circumstances that wouldn’t be on our list, but she’s tried a long list of pain medications without any substantial success. When it comes to family it’s just the two of us, we have no other family to speak of, my father passed away about a year ago.
Thanks chkthankgod. All places will be considered, but I'm leaning more toward the west coast because it sounds like it's more laid back. I had hoped I'd get a bunch of opinions here so I'd have several options to look at. Anyone else care to offer some advice?
Galactic: It mostly has to do with my mother. She had some bad experiences in California in the past and is strongly against being there. Since I have to bring her along with me that's why CA is out. Otherwise I would probably consider it.
Western cities have more single men and Eastern cities have more single women, if you consider those singles maps legitimate. Your interest in girls makes me want to tell you to look eastward for a place to relocate to, but the Pacific Northwest sounds best considering the other criteria.
The eastern half of the country has plenty of laidback cities that aren't massive overwhelming places to live. Given your criteria two come to mind...Portland, Maine and Burlington, Vermont. In addition Medical Marijuana is legal in both places.
