So I have a first anniversary coming up and i've narrowed it down to New Orleans and Washington DC, but can't decide between the two.

I've been to both places and loved both. New Orleans is the most unique US City i've ever been too. It was too hot for me when I went, but we'll be going in the fall if that makes any difference. Anyway I thought the food was great, great music, nice atmosphere, etc. A little quirky at times lol, but I loved it. I'm concerned about how much it's been affected by Hurricane Katrina though. For the natives or anyone who's been there recently (I visited before the Hurricane), how is it now? Is there still a substantial amount of devastation/damage to buildings and the city in general?

As for DC, I've been here several times and I fell in love with it from the get go. When I visited, I went to most of the important monuments and attractions. I visited Capitol Hill, Fords Theater, The White House, The Holocaust Museum, Arlington Cemetery, Lincoln Monument, etc. Just like N.O I haven't been in years though.

Things we both enjoy:

Live music (rock,jazz,reggae,etc.)
Good food
Shopping (Okay, I enjoy that mainly lol)
Dancing
Anything that has to do with Science or Space
Architecture

Keep in mind that we're on a budget. I don't want to go overboard with spending. I want to go where I can get my money's worth but as I said I don't want to go crazy with the spending as i'm still in school and working part time, so I have to be careful when it comes to finances.

- Bottom line is that I want it to be a fun and romantic trip. I don't mind visiting a few Museums or tourist attractions, but we'll only be there for a few days and I don't want to do things that are extremely structured the entire time, so i'm leaning towards New Orleans at this point, but I remember DC being so beautiful and I really enjoyed myself while I was there. Husband hasn't been to either place, so it'll be a first for him no matter where we go.

The thing is that when I visited DC and New Orleans, I was young, barely in my teens so I didn't get to experience all that each place offers. Now that i'm older (mid 20's) and can experience everything, i'm very excited to do so and really looking forward to it.

What I picture for this vacation is dancing, listening to awesome live music, having nice romantic candlelight dinners, etc. I'm looking for a place with a GREAT night life as well.

Sorry for the long post, but I just can't decide! Ugh, I'd appreciate any recommendations. THANK YOU.

I've been to Charleston (was there for a Rodeo) and it is really beautiful. I did consider it, but I thought DC and New Orleans had more going on and had a better night life? That's why I narrowed it down to those two. I also considered Savannah,GA as well but again, concerned about the lack of a nightlife.

I also want some place with easy and accessible public transportation. DC and NO seem to fit the bill.

If you are open to other suggestions, how about Quebec City?

Yikes, I can't imagine a less romantic destination than DC. I have to deal with the horrible traffic, pushy people and pushy commuters. It's definitely not a leisurely place, if you want to get around to any of the good destinations like the Smithsonian museums or the zoo during the day, you'll have to hit the Metro between 10AM-3PM or face the horrible commute rush hour on weekdays. DC is probably the worst city for live music its size in America, you have to get out to pretty dodgy areas to go to the best smaller ones in DC like Black Cat and the 9:30 Club. I don't know much about New Orleans but Las Vegas is a great honeymoon destination, they have world class cuisine, loads of fun activities and sights and lots of affordable live music and comedy shows. Also the nicer hotels have beautiful pools and romantic places. They have great shopping as well. Hotels there are very affordable now since most places have cut rates with the bad economy, you'd do well to get tickets thru Costco if youre a member or use a AAA discount if you have that.

New Orleans. Romantic stay in the Garden District, ride the St. Charles streetcar up to the quarter and enjoy dinner at Galatoires, walk through the French Market in Jackson Square and grab some beignets and coffee and go up to Frenchman St for the various live music venues. Walk back to St Charles and Canal and ride back to the suite. Next day can be spent exploring Uptown and Audubon Park, all of which is at the access of the historic St. Charles streetcar. You can even go on a short cruise on the Natchez riverboat while you are in New Orleans.

Depends what type of couple you are. If you like to drink, have a good time and go all out, then New Orleans would be a nice place. If you are looking to explore some of Americans grand history, museums, monuments, etc, then by all means go to D.C. Plus, as an added bonus, you can get drunk and have a good time in many areas of D.C. Preferrably Georgetown.
