i'm thinking about this thread, and i've come to the conclusion the coolest looking license plates are the ones i rarely see. whenever i see a west coast plate around here i stare, lol. anything east coast doesn't float my boat.

nj especially sucks, IMHO - "buff and black" - YAWN. some of the specialty ones are nice though.

Who has the rainbow? Hawaii? That's cute.

NJ is realllly boring. The NJ Shore one is cute, but the basic stinks.

The FL Manatee one is cute.

I'll agree that NJ's blows, just b/c I don't like the yellow fading to... manila? background color.

<-BO-RING!

But I don't like the vanity plates that "overdo" it either. Does anyone remember the Pennsylvania plates that had whole colorful scenes in the background?

I think that oftentimes, less is more. My favorites are simple ones such as

Georgia's standard

Rhode Island

Washington DC (I just like the slogan)

Ski Utah!

I catch a lot of heat for this, but I really like PA's old "You've got a Friend" plate from the 1980s. Many people thought it was cheesy/lame/whatever, but I've always thought it was kinda cute and almost a goodwill gesture for PA drivers traveling elsewhere.

Some of the Nevada plates are really colorful and interesting-- they have a dozen or so different designer plates, including a Las Vegas 100 year anniversary plate. It almost gets ridiculous-- how many different kinds of plates does one state need?

Believe it or not, I think the California plate is really well designed. Simple, with the stylish cursive red letters on white background, and not tacky looking like so many other states.

Maryland's is kind of boring

Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed

But I Kinda like the fancier one

But for SUVs, vans, ect.., they are extremely boring, except for the fancy writing

I love riding down the highway and checking out where the other drivers are from other states. Actually now that the area I live in is a hot newcomer area all I need to do is go to a major road.

I hate people who use license plate holders or tint and I cannot tell where they are from.

My favorite are:

Wyoming
Idaho
Utah
Mississippi
Kentucky
Georgia
North Dakota
North Carolina
Arizona
Tennessee

My results are base on plates that are currently being used for photos of current plates go to this link LICENSE PLATES OF THE WORLD

I thought I was the only one who liked NC's license plates. They're plain and they're old as dirt (they've had the same design since I recall my first memories...and that was back in like '86), but I like them. I don't like the tags with the red numbers/letters on them. I like the blue ones.

Besides NC--
Arizona
Colorado
Florida
Kentucky
Louisiana
Massachusetts
New York
Texas
Virginia
Washington, D.C.
