Wichita annexed large tracts of what is technically suburban land, making the city a total of 166 sq mi. in area. That's why its population is similar to cities like Cin, STL, Pitts.
Cincinnati's total area is less than half of Wichita's at just 80 sq mi., which means it is at least twice as densely populated. St Louis and Pittsburgh, at 61 and 58 sq mi. respectively, are even smaller and more dense.

In my experience, cities that annex tons of lands, towns, neighborhoods into their cities...generally means that larger swaths of their jurisdiction later just goes to hell.

They usually do it for a better tax base, than pump all the money into concentrated projects for further national name recognition. This is usually in favor of ignoring large swaths of land they swept up with fewer services they otherwise would have got if they remained separate.
