This city was founded in 1836 and incorporated 9 months later on June 5, 1836, three months after Chicago was incorporated.

It is astounding that Houston, which sprawls out in all directions and is geographically large, is that dense. New Orleans is very small as it is mostly below sea level, as evidenced by Katrina, and low population pre-Katrina and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach is jammed against the shoreline since it cannot expand inland because of the swamp and environmental regulations that go along with it.

There are plenty of much much older buildings in downtown. You just have to look. But the obvious fact that Houston is dominated by modern architecture is not its own fault. Houston did not really begin to boom until the 70s, so there was really no need for skyscrapers to be built. The new architecture just represents a rather young city...in terms of power. The city of Houston itself is very old (around the same age as Atlanta and Chicago) and old architecture can be found all over the city; however, most of it is not in the form of tall buildings but houses and shops (something that even a lot of northern cities cannot claim).

I have to go with Jacksonville! It's my home city and I think it's beautiful! I love the way everything is so lit up at night, especially the bridges downtown, and you can see the reflection off of the St. Johns River! Gorgeous!

That does look like a really neat downtown area. Only thing is, are we rating downtowns or skylines?
