Florida tied with Cali in urbanity?!
yeah, that is pretty ridiculous.

... and even with the severe downturn the economy of California by any measure is way more productive than the economy of Florida- by 100s of millions of dollars.

Other preferences aside, I think it is amazing that some folks actually prefer the weather in Florida when I could not physiologically survive there- it is beyond ridiculous to me to be sweating while drying off from a shower to wash off the sweat- and this was in October, I could barely breath through the humidity. I know that some folks dig that type of weather but I could never stand the very presence of the air around me for hours being that oppressive and uncomfortable for so much of the year, and to escape it all you have is air conditioning, which I loathe almost as much.

As you say, different strokes for different folks, but for me, it definitely is the (sub)tropical paradise I know it is!
Well being born and raised here, all I have to say is one thing...you are plain crazy!

Yes, Florida IS more diverse than California. I will give Florida that much. We have many MANY nations of people from different sections of the world. We have the island people from various Carribbean countries like Haiti, Puerto-Rico, Cuba, & The Dominican Republic. We have south americans like Brazilians, Peruvians, Venezuelans and so on and so forth. We have Mexicans from various regions in Mexico. We have Europeans from many different countries like France and Spain and Italy. And lastly, we DO have a sizable Asian and indian population as well. So we have basically everybody in the world except for Aussies, Hawaiians, and other folk from the islands in the pacific. California consist of Mexicans, Asians, Blacks, and White. Not really diverse when compared to NYC and Florida.

Time to do your research. California is one of the most diverse places on Earth. You've basically said FL has more people from the Caribbean, a relatively small part of the globe. CA on the other hand boasts more from the much larger areas: Asia (Far East, Southeast, India, Middle East) Africa, Europe, Central America. Add to that the Pacific Islands, Australia and the nations largest Native American population. You can't argue for FL. Here's a sample taken from the Census website:

California (over 10,000)

Time for you to get a brain. First of all, next time you cite research, cite the source you got it from. Because then your straight BSing when you don't provide the link you got it from. Afraid I'm gonna use it against you? Coward. Second of all, we are WELL aware California has MORE people than Florida. Florida has a population of 18Million compared to California's 37M. That does not make it more diverse in race! Third of all, you listed a bunch of nationalities that fall under the same race. Philipino, Chinese, Vietnamese?! They are ALL asian!! We can go back and forth and name all the nations that these races come from. It's not going to mean California is more diverse. Like I said before (I guess I better categorize it in ethnic distinction for you), California consist of Asians, Latinos, Blacks, & Caucasians. Florida consist of Europeans, Latinos, Hispanics, West-Indians, Asians, Native-Americans, & Middle-easterners. We're right BELOW New York with having the most diverse race of people. Any transplant from New York City can confirm and back me up on that. California is THIRD. Anyone who thinks California is more diverse than Florida is an idiot.

On the subject of ethnic diversity, everything is on the American Community Survey Website (for ancestries, from 2008-2010 ACS Estimates: for Asian, Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander, from 2010 census)

American FactFinder

Since it's so user-unfriendly to most users, I have taken the liberty of PDF'ing a lot of the stats (or can upon request) and screenshotting it here for everyone's perusal.

Or you can PM me if you want directions on how to use the site

In terms of Top 10 ancestries, here's what each state looks like:

California 2010: 37,253,956

1) Mexican: 11,423,146
2) German: 3,468,924
3) Irish: 2,731,887
4) English: 2,436,530
5) African American (Black - West Indian - Sub-Saharan African): 1,801,598
6) Italian: 1,537,665
7) Filipino: 1,474,707
8) Chinese (excluding Taiwanese): 1,349,111
9) American: 813,599
10) French: 762,777

Top 10 total: 27,799,944 (74.6% of the population)

Florida 2010: 18,801,310

1) German: 2,173,912
2) Irish: 1,954,930
3) African American (Black - West Indian - Sub-Saharan African): 1,929,621
4) English: 1,569,344
5) American: 1,297,215
6) Cuban: 1,213,438
7) Italian: 1,206,338
8) Puerto Rican: 847,550
9) Mexican: 629,718
10) Polish: 502,726

Top 10 total: 13,325,291 (70.9% of the population)

To be fair though, Florida's top 10 ancestries make up only 70.9% of the population, compared to California's top 10 ancestries making up 74.6% of the population. Of course, this doesn't go into the deep religious, linguistic, and ethnic differences within nationalities (IE: Iranian Armenians and Jews are counted as Iranian, despite those two groups being way different than the Iranian Muslim Persian speaking majority; or within India where there is a HUGE difference between a Tamil speaking Hindu and a Kashmiri speaking Muslim), but under that sort of rubric, California is under.

In fact, Florida IS the most diverse state under the US census defined rubric, beating out New York (Top 10 nationalities = 75.8% of the population) and New Jersey (Top 10 nationalities = 83.0% of the population).

Florida does EXTREMELY well in one part of the world, and it should get credit. However, the way people classify "Asia" as being relatively homogenous and as one is sort of mind boggling, considering that the continent has 54% of the planet's population.
