Yeah, Chicago goes in waves as all the stupid gangs go after each other, then they all have to do revenge attacks, etc. Finally they calm down until the next time something stupid happens. Over 2/3 of the murders in Chicago are gang related.

Stay away from gangs and the infested areas that are centered in parts of the west and south sides and it's actually very safe.

Most gangs here tend to be black and hispanic. White people are 33% of the population, yet only make up around 4% of the murders. That's a pretty crazy stat.

Estimated murder rates:

Gang members: 100,000 people, around 288 murders per year.
Non gang members: 2,600,000 people, around 147 murders per year.

Gangs: 288/100,000
Non-gangs: 5.5/100,000

crazy stuff. Of course sometimes innocent people are targeted by those thinking they're in a gang, but overwhelmingly it's thugs on thugs.

Oakland so far: only 2.
The much battered, possibly recalled mayor Jean Quan laid out a 100 blocks crime-fighting initiative last October which covers 92% of Oakland's violent crime. It seemed to help the last part of 2011, and so far so good the first 3 weeks of the year. I love Oakland and hope they can curb the senseless violence that has plagued this town for years. I'll be following the murder count closely all year and will post updates here. My prediction is get it down to under 80. It's 80 too much of course. They had 110 murders in 2011, and 95 the year before.
