HI all,

Trying to decide between Sarasota FL and League City, TX. I plan on moving my family from the Northeast down south. I am a patent attorney, and plan to move my practice also. Sarasota seems prettier than the other side of the Gulf where League City is, but I am originally from TX, have law school friends who still live in Texas and who would probably refer me some patent/trademark work. Also, in Texas I can waive into the state bar, whereas in FL I would have to take the bar exam. My wife and mother-in-law (grandma to our 2 year old) love the beach. I am not a beach person. Based upon the above, where would you move? Thanks!

You have friends there, are a native Texan, and you wouldn't have to take the bar again. Beaches are nothing like Florida, however.

You said you are not a beach person, then move to League City. You have connections in Texas and don't have to take the bar.

However; the people that live in your family that like the beach would prefer Sarasota, becaue the beaches are way better there.

Houston might be a better choice since I hear that the legal market is one of the strengths of the city during these economic times. You will definitely find a job here in the big city!

Aren't there lots of patent/trademark court cases in the Eastern District of Texas?

I'd lean toward League City... your familiarity, the bar, close to a big city with booming economy and great city amenities, etc. The only advantage I see to FL would be scenery/beaches.

Are the beaches in Tampa Bay Area really that much better than Houston area? Where are comparable beaches in Texas to anything in Florida, if they exist?

Yes. Florida has some of the world's best beaches.
