My top 2 choices based on your criteria and my experience would be Charlotte and Houston for bigger cities.

We have only ever lived in cities with populations around 60-80,000 so it is hard for me to determine if we would prefer big vs. small. We see advantages to both. We do have a large dog so that might make a difference as well. I guess I will say mid-size city might be best.

If you are attending graduate school for nursing, I would think Houston would be at the top of your list. World-renowned medical center which is close to many world-class cultural attractions, many opportunities for outdoor activities becuse of proximity to Gulf, etc.

For sporting events, is there a preference for major league pro sports vs. minor leage/college sports?

Usually we prefer college sports.

Columbia might be the best choice in terms of being in between the beach and mountains, University of South Carolina sporting events, places to eat and some museums. It is about the same size as the city you currently live in too.

I agree. Besides being centrally located to the beach and the mountains, there are natural amenities within the region itself to enjoy (Congaree National Park (U.S. National Park Service), Congaree National Park - Congaree River Blue Trail (U.S. National Park Service), The River Alliance (http://www.riveralliance.org/threeriversgreenway.htm - broken link), Lake Murray, South Carolina SC). Gamecocks sports is definitely king there, and the football team had a pretty good season this year and its baseball team is back-to-back CWS national champions. As the state capital, there are several museums to enjoy, including one of the South's largest children's museums. While Columbia's culinary scene isn't as noted as Charleston's or Savannah's, it's definitely a growing one with more options being added all the time.
