Yes, unfortunately you're right. This is also in addition to politicians like Rick Santorum that have taken a hard Right turn during their career to appease a much more conservative Republican Party.
At any rate, though, the Northeast still does have vestiges of that tradition.
Rick Santourm is universally despised in Pennsylvania. Even Republicans hate the guy here. Also you are right about the rise of extereme right wingers in the Republican party. The Democratic party is just a moderate party. We have no left wing parties in America.
Why would you be surprised, the catholic church is anti abortion/gay/etc. The same hispanic catholic vote that voted overwhelmingly for Obama also voted against gay marriage.

Opposition to prop 8 means pro gay marriage, hence the surprise.
For what it's worth, like universal healthcare and gay marriage are considerably more important than medical marijuana and assisted suicide on every level. One is what should be a basic human right (marriage), and the other is assuring everyone has the right to medical treatment. Conversely, medical marijuana is "ahhhh bro my shoulder hurts. Gimme some weed lol!". The overall state of medical marijuana is a joke in my opinion. Assisted suicide is a depressing and controversial subject...though not really at the forefront of most people's concerns.
In terms of marijuana, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and DC have all passed medical marijuana laws. Meanwhile, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Maine have all decriminalized marijuana.
Yet coincidentally has the worst pollution in the nation.
Thats only greater LA because of the large population and
because of the physical geography that tends to trap pollution, and really that only applies to LA. Any region that is on the lower end of precipitation and sunny, surrounded by mountains, where you have dense marine air, that stays closer to the ground is going to have that.
Besides it universally known that air quality is almost literally night and day. California has made tremendous strides toward improving this. Its one of the many reasons why it is much more expenive to live here.

The Democratic Party is plenty liberal. The difference is there's no extreme liberal party that's recognized like the ultra-conservative Tea Party...there's the Green Party, but they're largely ignored. Probably because they're too stoned to effectively market themselves.
It would be nice if we could actually have 5 parties in order to get some diversity in politics. Going from most liberal to most conservative:
Green-->Democratic-->Intelligent Person Party-->Republican-->Tea
Hopefully the Intelligent party will be created sometime soon. It would be nice for the truly moderate people out there to have a voice.
Yeah no. It's a moderate party. The only a very few Democratic are actually liberal, like Dennis Kucinich. The Republican party is a neo-conservative far right wing party. Now you are right. The green party is most definitely left wing but it has no chance of getting politicians elected.

All it will take is stronger organization on the part of progressives to make themselves heard as loudly as the Tea Party types. Obama is more liberal than Clinton was, and in part I think that's because Democrats knew they needed to produce a candidate which appealed to progressives after Ralph Nader siphoned off enough votes from Gore in 2000 to give W the appearance of victory.
