This is a very interesting set of data. How would an expat from say France to Houston but counted? Is that a primary residence for them, I assume it is. Great research!
|
Yeah, Houston has a large Vietnamese and Indian population last I heard. I think it could possibly outnumber the Bay Area's Vietnamese and Indian population sooner than we think. Though as of now:
Vietnamese:
SF Bay: 186,225
Houston: 104,126
DFW: 72,059
Miami: 11,057
Indian:
SF Bay: 245,685
DFW: 100,079
Houston: 91,852
Miami: 41,334

I assume the census data does not show second generation's residents such as those born in the USA but with one or both parents born elsewhere. I assume we use foreign born as the best approximation of international representation in an area.

This is true, but there has been a huge migration from all over Europe and Asia to the Bay Area in the past 20 years specifically to work in technology as even entire companies or corporate division relocate to Silicon Valley from overseas--most of them work with corporate relocation services that dont go on trulia. lol
Im sure Miami attracts wealthy Latin Americans, but you obviously have very little idea of the fact that the Bay Area and its half trillion dollar economic juggernaut actually causes people to move there for work.

Not sure about the doublespeak comment when this is what you said:
"....from these countries actually move to and make their primary residence." You didn't state and I think you know and have even now acknowledged that what you posted was not "where these people are moving to" it is "where these people have moved from historically". I simply wanted to restate that because I was posting in 2011 according to that survey those numbers are where people are CURRENTLY looking at purchasing homes. No historic information.
Did you read that article I posted showing that California has seen less new Foreign population than either Florida or Texas since 2005? Would that not go against your comment about its "half a trillion dollar economic juggernaut actually causes people to move there for work".
Did you see the Fairus.org material? It shows both California and Florida had their foreign born populations triple in the last 20 years.
Florida: 1mil to 3.6mil
California: 3.6 to 10.1
The Foreign-Born Asian population in Florida increased by a significantly higher percentage than the Foreign-Born Asian population in California from 2000 to 2009 according to that organization's research. Florida since 2000 has seen a 30% jump in Foreign Born Globally while Cali has seen a 12% jump. Texas which seems to have fallen aside for some reason in this thread has seen a 37% foreign-born increase since 2000.

So now that California has 10 MILLION FOREIGN BORN RESIDENTS , I dont mind spreading the wealth. lol
|
California: 163,696 sq mi
That's 8.2 foreign people per square mile. So let's say 8 since I don't think someone would appreciate being fractioned off.
Florida: 65,755 sq mi
That's 9.4 foreign people per square mile. So 9.

I thought this thread isn't about all of California, I thought it was just about Northern California.
A huge percentage (probably majority) of that foreign born went to Southern California, which no one is going to dispute is cosmopolitan. However, as for Northern California, that question is still in the air....I bet if its NorCal alone, it would rank lower than TX and FL on this measure.

I dont know about this. I think NorCal is Cosmopolitan. I just also think Houston, Dallas, Miami and to an extent Orlando are also cosmopolitan.

I think its cosmopolitan as well, but as much as Miami? I don't really know. My brain has a hard time selling that, given that not only mass media has beamed into my brain the cosmopolitan nature of Miami, but also the sheer percentage of foreign born in Miami while being represented by more countries.
It's pretty clear that this thread has went the direction of San Francisco vs. Miami, but there are other cities that exist in NorCal and Florida such as Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Sacramento, Stockton, Fresno, etc. Especially since Texas is still an option (Houston is VERY underrated, and Dallas is right behind), there hasn't been enough about them.

Aren't there any Native American groups over 10,000 in any of the metro areas? And are these ancestries alone or alone with something else?
