Default Multiple team (in one sport) media markets: Which set of teams get equal amount of support?

In the US, there are only 4 media markets that have multiple teams in one sport: NYC, LA, Chicago, and SF Bay. Washington-Baltimore seem to be in separate media markets, for now, so I omitted them. Though, if someone wants to correct me if in either Baltimore or Washington media markets if all the areas teams are covered in both markets, I'd be interested.

It would be interesting to see which set of teams gets equal support across the board, instead of there being a big dominant brother-little brother relationship.

Which ones do you think it holds true for?

NYC (NFL): Giants-Jets
NYC (MLB): Yankees-Mets
NYC (NBA): Knicks-Nets
NYC (NHL): Rangers-Devils-Islanders
LA (MLB): Dodgers-Angels
LA (NBA): Lakers-Clippers
LA (NHL): Kings-Ducks
CHI (MLB): White Sox-Cubs
SF Bay (NFL): 49ers-Raiders
SF Bay (MLB): Giants-Athletics

IMO, I think it would be White Sox-Cubs. When I was out in Chicago, there seem to be the same amount of fans and passion for both clubs. IMO, it seems to also be the best crosstown rivalry as a result.

You haven't been to Chicago if you think white sox have anywhere near the same cachet as the Cubs even with the White Sox WS a decade earlier

90% of Greater Chicago roots for the Cubs

To be fair, I was more in the southside than anywhere else.

No way. The Cubs are MUCH more popular outside of the Chicago area, but within the metro it's actually fairly even. I think according to the polls there are more cubs fans than sox, but not by much. It was exactly even as far as where does a total of the fan base live for each team, with 63% of the fans for each team living in the burbs.

I'd say 49ers / Raiders, Dodgers / Angels, Jets / Giants

I could be wrong about the NY teams but it seems like they are both very popular, especially recently. I don't know enough about hockey to comment on that.

Interesting question. I've always assumed the Jets and Giants had roughly the same number of fans. That would be my guess, admittedly knowing little about NFL fan-dom in NYC.

Dodgers/Angels get the same amount of support? I was always under the impression that LA was a Dodger town?

The 49ers have significantly more support in the Bay Area than the Raiders. A generation or two, including myself, did not grow up with the Raiders playing in the Bay Area.

I'd also say the Dodgers have more support too. Outside of Orange County and the IE, the Dodgers seem to dominate.

Jets have closed the gap on the Giants with Rex Ryan over the past few years but it's still not close. And that will be even harder with the recent success of the Giants.

Yankees/Mets, Knicks/Nets, and Lakers/Clippers lol

Rangers>>Devils>>Islanders

I've always been under the impression the Dodgers had much more support than the Angels, and likewise for the Giants over Athletics. However I don't follow baseball closely enough to comment.

Kings definitely have more support than the Ducks, even with the somewhat recent Stanley Cup for Anaheim.

Voted 49ers/Raiders, San Fran has more support in NorCal but the Raiders make it up in LA.

According to team value pages, they are roughly the same. But I do agree that the Giants have way more cachet than the Jets, especially amongst younger people. I've seen way more Giants gear while going around New Jersey and NYC than Jets, even when the Jets made the AFC Championship game while the Giants didn't.

I got that impression too, which is weird considering that the Athletics have won 4 WS championships in the Bay Area, while the Giants have only won one.

Well, that would make sense if the Raiders were the only team that people in LA were rooting for. The Rams were there for 46 years, and the Chargers are right next door. In addition, I've surfed some 49er forums during the playoffs, and it seems that half the users were from LA.

Given that though, it is 100% possible that in fact the Raiders have the larger fanbase than the 49ers.
