I can't see the Olympics in Minneapolis. Just can't. But then again, I'm FROM Atlanta and couldn't see Atlanta with the Olympics either.
I say:
1. Chicago - Not even a fan of Chi, but I can't deny that as being a great city. Give them their chance.
2. Washington DC
3. San Francisco
4. Seattle
5. New York City
6. Miami
7. Atlanta - Yes. Give them a 2nd chance to get it right this time LA had it twice... (BUT it better be after the Beltline is completed). I'm biased though.
I think for Winter Olympics
1. Denver Denver Denver
2. Minneapolis (but where will the slopes be?)
3. Portland
4. Seattle

not all that far-fetched, when Atlanta was awarded the 1996 games, Minneapolis finished as the USOC's runner-up and also, as the runner up in the final IOC vote (tied with LA) in 1952 in which Helsinki was awarded the games after losing their previous 1940 award to the WWII cancellation.
the IOC would never again award Denver any Olympics after they rejected the previously awarded 1976 games over a paltry $5 million bond proposal.

An interesting thought but one will notice with the Winter Olympics that size of city isn't as important as the Summer games, with recent/upcoming examples such as Lillehammer or Sochi. Towns like Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge or even Jackson Hole could be relevant bids as well.

Why not? The Minneapolis area is currently larger (and will be even bigger in 2024) than what the Atlanta area was back when it bid (1988) and held the Summer Olympics in 1996. IMO, if Atlanta was able to host the Olympics, many metros of similar size should be able to.
As far as Atlanta hosting another Olympics, the area had its chance and blew it.
I forgot to vote for Detroit! I think the Olympics is just what that city needs to gain some prominence.
I voted Detroit for the same reason you wanted too. But lets face it, nit gonna happen. Detroit is facing bankrupcy. They might be the largest city to do so. They are seeking federal help just to stay alive. Detroit aint got money to host the Olympics.
I would use caution with the excitement, we've just begun eying 2024 and if we build up too much hope then a loss (which is increasingly likely) will hurt. This September we find out who gets 2020 and it's down to Istanbul, Madrid, and Tokyo. This is like the fourth time Madrid has come into the top 3 consecutively.
I'm not sure if Miami should attempt to build venue's required for an Olympics considering the fiasco with the Marlin's stadium. I just feel like it would be a disaster.
Fiasco? The fiasco was about tax dollars being used. And now a horrbile ownership group for the marlins but the stadium was built quickly and under budget. So not sure what that has to do with it.

It's about a lot more than that, like all the shady dealings behind it, such as how a $91 million loan could end up costing $1.2 billion. The SEC even started investigating the deal.
Southern California (LA and SD) is blessed with near perfect weather. The two cities are only 90 minutes apart (Some events from the 1984 Olympics were held just as far from LA)
Many venues are already in place (or in advanced planning stages).
After SoCal: NY, Chicago and DC. Maybe Seattle and Miami.
