I'm from NY state. Not NYC, but have been there hundreds of times. I have also lived in LA, so I understand SOcal mentality and the like. I have also visited Chicago several times. Definately enough times to garnish an opinion. Having said all that, I have never been to San Francisco. Even when I lived in LA, I just never ventured out there. I wanted to, just never got around to doing so. I will give you my take on San Francisco.
I think it looks great. It is a beautiful city. That would be hard for anyone to argue. Keep in mind. I've never actually been there, so this is just speculation.
I think for a city of 800,000 it is awesome. I kind of like the fact that it gets colder than SoCal. Being fromt the east, I don't mind cold. Although LA's weather was perfect (no humidity).
I think San Francisco is a premiere city. I don't understand those who dispute that. You have to consider the metro and even CSA as well. So it has much more than 800,000 people.
I don't think I would like all the constant toursists.
As much as I love cities on hills (I've lived in Pittsburgh), at least the way they look. I hate walking them, so that might be a negative for me. I like to walk all over the place. Then again, I'm sure I could take the trolley up the hills and walk down them. Pittsburgh was brutal with all the hills. There's good and bad. Cities engrained in hills look nice, but can be tiring as he ll to walk.
I hear that the food culture in San Fran is top notch. That would be a plus, since I am a foodie.
I don't like the cost of living. Probably the reason that the population stays the same in the city itself is because A) there's no more room to build and B)The cost of living is so high.
Other than that I think San Fran is a hel l of a city and I am always pissed off that I didn't do that 8 hour trek from LA when I lived there. I don't care about political beliefs of a city. And having tons of hippies doesn't discourage me one bit! I have lived in Ithaca, NY before, and that city is like a miniature version of San Francisco, or so I was told from my friend who was going to Cornell who was from SF.
When I think of San Francisco the first thing that comes to mind is the natural beauty. I think of the movie, "Basic Instinct" with Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas. That movie showed that city well. I think of all the Dirty Harry movies. I think of the "porn theatres" that San Fran used to be littered with. Not sure if their still there. To me San Fran is a "seductive" city. By the way it looks and from it's history. It just oozes "seduction" if that makes sense. Oh, plus the band Journey is from there, and I love that song they made about the city by the bay...
These are the opinion of just one NY'er. Not a NYC New Yorker, but a NY'er nonetheless. There's more to NY than just NYC.
Excellent post, you'll have to visit sometime, you'll love it.....
I'm a Chicagoan I been to SF and think SF and the entire state of California sucks! Arizona, now that's a nice state.
I've been through the entirety of Illinois and visited Chicago many times. Splendid city. State can get a bit dull but the people are very warm and welcoming. Always had a blast there, tons of respect.

So can you ellaborate on how California sucks and why Arizona is so nice? With the exception of the Grand Canyon and the I-40 restroom break at the Meteor Crater I can't possibly see what Arizona has to offer that California doesn't?

I think he's talking about politically. Misguided a bit, but not totally off-base, if I understand his previous posts.
I've been wanting to go to SF for a while now but I always think of it as basically another NYC, just more laid back and simple. NYC is chaotic. I think SF is more cleaner, very diverse, historic and old-fashioned, which i just love.
My mother's friend from SF came to NYC recently and she was in awe, which was quite shocking since I thought SF is very similar to NYC.
One of the only other cities in the country that many Chicagoans (at least myself) say they can live is New York or San Francisco, so I'd say that they like the city.

I found Midtown and Southern Manhattan to be every bit as clean (if not more) than San Francisco when I was there in 2006. I also noticed a lack of panhandlers and homeless in Manhattan, something you see quite often once your out of the Financial district in San Francisco. SOM and the Tenderlion are full of them.
