This is interesting because I would think people see NYC, LA, and Chic on a larger level but the discussions here go the other way. San Fran gains inclusion but with its size I can't take that too seriously.

In what way is the bay region on par with the Toronto or Chicago? Do most people see it a cut above the rest (BOS HOU DAL PHIL ATL MIA)? Is it the Silicon Valley or California location or what?

I can see the flip side but does it really deserve to be on a higher tier than a city like Boston?

I don't know how to answer this. Toronto and Chicago are often compared, and similar. The Bay Area is unlike anything else. It's a truly unique metro area, and probably one of the 5 more important ones in the US.

The "Bay Area" isn't a metro area. It's a conglomeration of 6 metro areas:

San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA MSA (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, and San Mateo Counties)
San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA MSA (including San Benito County)
Santa Rosa-Petaluma, CA MSA
Vallejo-Fairfield, CA MSA
Santa Cruz-Watsonville, CA MSA
Napa, CA MSA

So yes, it takes all 6 metro areas combined to barely be more relevant than Houston or Boston.

However, you should combine these 6 metro areas as well and they will exceed the Bay Area in stature:

Washington DC MSA
Baltimore MSA
Philadelphia MSA
New York MSA
Hartford MSA
Boston MSA

They are literally touch each other as well. That's how much sense the "Bay Area" makes.

In all honesty I would definitely put it with Chicago and Toronto, but out of the three it definitely would place last.

Its definitely there with Chicago and Toronto, and really on a world stage its more important than both of them. Toronto is tops in Canada, Chicago is #3 in the US, but San Francisco has more international stature and the nature of its economy/technology, its far more on the worlds stage...

I would place it with Boston or Dallas before considering a Chicago or Toronto comparison

It's up to par with Chicago and Toronto, but maybe not exactly equal to them. But I see it as definitely in the top 5 or 6 most important cities/metros in the US.

DC is like 5hrs from Boston. Is San Jose a 5hr drive from SF? Making a case for combining the Bosh-Wash Corridor because the Bay Area is connected is kinda out of order.
