Wouldn't DC have the most gang activity?

Certified Gangsters. These guys have more bodies than Big Meech, Nino Brown, Pookie Williams, Wayne Perry and Brother Mouzone put together. And they're down to WHATEVER to protect their turf and power.

The Blackstone Rangers became the the Black P Stone Rangers. The name was changed again to El Rukn by Jeff Fort, after his conversion to Islam. Jeff Fort was the founder of the Blackstone Rangers.

In short, there are WAY more gangs in California (and LA area) than there are in Illinois (and Chicago area)
Not sure why the Rollin 60's are not on that list. They were one of the original Crip gangs.

I've never understood the gang mentality. Do you get paid when you're in a gang?

I was thinking LA had more gang members over all, possibly more gangs in general. But I was thinking The Chi had more gang members per capita. I think of Chicago when I think of gangs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was thinking Chicago had a deeper history in the origin of gangs. Dating back to the Al Capone days and even before that. I'm not talking about mobs....but all those mobsters in Chicago started out in neighborhood street gangs that were fairly organized for that day and time.

Through illegal activities they do.

If the primary motivation is to get paid, I could see doing it. Otherwise, why would you be a part of it? I'd be a Crip on Tuesday, a Blood on Wednesday, or a Latin King on Thursday if they were paying me right. The only color I'm riding for is green.

Yeah I here ya. But many get in them for protection or for a sense of "family". Many are born into it. Sounds sad but it's true.
